Yeah, it's that old thing again. I know that the correct way to write the short version of "Macintosh" is "Mac" and not "MAC". But it seems that others don't. I was flipping through the December issue of Macworld Mag, and on the inside back cover is a full page ad for MYOB. In their copy, they use the "MAC" version.

I thought that this was common knowledge for those who have used a Mac for more than 10 minutes in their entire lives. I would think that the folks at MYOB (who have been making their software for Mac for years) would get it right. But no. This kind of stuff drives me nuts, as I am in this industry (creating things like this).

Not sure what the point of this thread is, other than to express my disgust with the people who did the ad for MYOB. That, and I'm extremely bored here at work today.

Thanks for listening.

It's not an acronym, right? Therefore, it's Mac...short for Macintosh. Simple.

What I hate more is when people substitute Apple for Mac and screw up the capitalization of Apple's products: "Mac should release Iphoto for the PC."

I usually respond with, "Yeah, and Windows should release a faster xBOx."

MAC can also mean Machine Address Code. Ethernet and wireless devices each have a unique MAC address. They can be used to send IP addresses to many computers over a network, as in a school (I had to register my computer's MAC address to get on my school's network).

Actually, that's just the Media Access Control address number. Same definition as the one I posted above.

I hate the word Mac. It now singlehandedly seperates OS X users as some sort of cult.

What we now use IS a "warmed over" UNIX system. That's great! We have an Apple-branded GUI that sits atop a well organized system, with lots of potential.

I would prefer that instead of "Macs" they would be called OS X boxes. Then again, you would have the press screw it all up calling them "the computers formally known as Macs..."

Darwin boxes, maybe? Maybe Apple should rename Darwin to AppleBSD or something like that. Just to let the wannabe propeller-heads know that this is, in fact, Unix. But yeah, "MAC" does annoy me. Every time somebody asks me about a MAC, I let them know that my MAC, "00:03:93:05:55:de" has yet to crash on me, even though it is rather fast when compared to other MACs on its subnet.
