Sorry that I didn't see the other replies, I eventually got home at 2am. Didn't get called out for an unforeseen problem either so very happy that the weekend wasn't spoiled.

I feel for ya, I'm in IT, and I've worked my share of weekends, and nights. I have one scheduled coming up, we're converting a number of our servers over to VMware. This is the last big push for the my application and we'll be doing 8 servers over the weekend.

One of the worst things about IT is having to work weekends - I hate having to work weekends. I suppose that I should be thankful that they haven't found anybody cheaper to come in and do what I do though.

I think he meant that you could try to pass the time by doing some other work unrelated to the direct task at hand.

If I had to do it all over again, I'd definitely pick a different profession. My dream job is a parking lot attendant at disneyworld You work 8 hours, and you don't take work home with you, that is when you punch out, you're done. You get to work outside in the awesome florida sunshine. Perhaps I'll hit the lottery and move to FLA

I think next time I'm off, I'll put the SIM into a normal phone, then my emails & BB messenger won't work

Yep, I had to work tonight, I'm working next weekend, I frequently work many nights after my children go to bed. At least this isn't as bad as my prior gig. I was getting called at 3:00am, that got old pretty quick. Trouble is that some things need to be fixed when they run, and many batch jobs run over night. This job has the benefit at least of letting me sleep through the night most of the time.

I got out, thank god....

Not only did I run a mission critical database for my employer, I also wrote the end user software to access and mutate it. I spent many late nights at home upgrading that software for the most stupid feature requests without pay.

It's the old time vs. money dilemma. To enjoy a high quality of life, you need money. But working to get that money means you don't have any time or energy left to enjoy it.

It's necessary but not easy to find the right balance.

I've lived without money and its better to have it. Saying that, I'm by no means rich, but I have a good salary that enables a large 'buffer' each month. I'm also lucky to have good medical coverage, good holidays and good bosses. I'll eventually move into another area of I.T. that doesn't require weekend work.

Oh, I'm also working tonight at 22H00 and at 05H30 tomorrow as well.
