I've heard of a lot complaints about their web hosting services. Check out WebhostingTalk and you'll get some invaluable advice and reviews.

GoDaddy is horrible. Their web interface for managing stuff sucks, they don't have toll-free customer service, and overall they're just a sub-par operation. They get away with it because they're so huge.

If you're interested in learning a little bit, go with a VPS instead of shared hosting. Linode.com has VPS packages starting at $19.95/mo for 12GB storage, 200GB bandwidth, 360 MB RAM, and no service agreement/contract. They have no limitations on what you're allowed to do with your linode, aside from the obvious (nothing illegal, no child porn, no spam machines, etc.). I've been using them since August and have been extremely happy.

They also have a great referral program - $20 for every person who registers under your referral link and stays on for at least 90 days.

That being said, PM me and I'll send you my referral link if you'd like.
Sell or send me your vintage Mac things if you don't want them.

interesting. I'm taking a course which is using them for all the examples. I already have webspace(frickin mobileMe) so I'm not sure if I need hosting for my little site. Certainly not $20/mo worth.

I'm checking out webhosting talk, thanks.

Linode is pretty cool. They (and Slicehost) built their whole business around Xen based virtual machines. To be able to offer essentially a dedicated server for $20 is damn cool.

There are only a couple of things that I hope are solved with this model: one is the ability to run your own VM host in that environment (actually, VMWare Server *might* work in there, it would be interesting to try, although you can count on Xen not working). The other is cheap storage. I would love to be able to use this server as a means of offsite backup, but SAN disks are simply too expensive for them to be liberal about what kind of disk space they can offer for $20. As it stands, I use Amazon S3. I've even thought about integrating the two, but I'm not sure I want to trust my network connection to getting reasonably fast I/O.

Anyway, just me rambling...

Slicehost is great, but not for amateurs. It basically gives you root access to a Linux box and says, "OK, there you go. Have fun!"

Really, it's not that painful. There are loads of guides online on how to install Linux (Linode has premade images they just stick on your drive - you tell them which one you want to use), Apache, PHP, and mySQL. I was up and running in less than 20 minutes, and I had never done any of it before.

Linode has a dedicated IRC channel where people are very friendly - which is unusual for Linux-centric communities. I really love them, and they have better prices than Slicehost.

And, yeah - for $20 you have godlike control over your environment. None of these BS fees just to have SSH/SFTP access. Run as many email address as you like. Run an IRC channel, whatever PHP extensions you want...the options are really limitless, compared to shared hosting. You're even allowed to run your own DNS, although Linode provides their own.

If you knew how to use a command line, you were already beyond most people.
