I picked up my Combo MacBook late last year and am finally starting to want DVD burning functionality. So I've scanned a few drives on places like NewEgg and it seems that the vast majority are tray-loaders.

What I'm wondering is; What slot loading drives can be installed in a MacBook and will work natively? And are there any new ones on the horizon that offer something worth waiting for? (Blu-ray, for example)

TIA.

I haven't seen any slim BluRay slot-loading readers or writers; Apple's the only company using slot loading drives in significant volume and I think I read they're in talks with Sony about creating one.

P.S. Your sig dissolved last week.

FastMac | Performance Upgrades

After doing a lot of research (thanks to mduell for the help), I have come to the conclusion that the K06 is a 12.7mm drive, and the MacBook needs a 9.5mm.

I have found the stock Panasonic UJ-857 on eBay for around $99 brand new.

Apple SuperDrive DVD Burner Drive 8x - Macbook Pro

A little pricey, but your options are relatively limited.

I replaced my son's a few months ago. I paid about $150. Check eBay too:

I just ordered a brand new Superdrive off of eBay for $118 with shipping. Guaranteed not DOA, and comes with Apple warranty.

I'm sure it won't be an issue, but I'd be a little skeptical that apple would warranty a drive that you bought through ebay.

You can order many products on eBay that come with the manufacturer warranty. They are unopened products and the person selling them has a legitimate eBay store that acts as a vendor for products, much like any real store (ie. Best Buy) works.
