There was an unusual incident at the National Zoo this weekend -- a young deer from the neighboring wooded areas jumped into the lion habitat. The predictable resulted. A bystander took some video (warning: violent in kind of an amateur National Geographic way).

Given the interest it generated, the zoo should do this kind of thing all the time.

I love the people shouting suggestions to the deer.

Oh, and this is stupid:
A subsequent examination found that the animal would not survive its injuries, so it was euthanized, according to the Post.
Toss it back into the lion cage after hours.

I've always wondered how giraffes would do in hand to hand combat. I'd like to see a giraffe paired with up zebra, or maybe an irritating monkey.

One time when I was at the zoo one of the elephants managed to get itself into the moat between it's habitat and the rest of the world. It was so close that it was able to get it's trunk about a two feet over the short fence that was between us and him. In other words, if you were standing at the fence, the elephant could, AND DID put his trunk right there in your face. We stayed there for about 20 minutes playing with the elephant who was really getting a kick out of it. He was shaking "hands" with us, smacking us around a bit, etc... He even managed to blow a huge wad of elephant snot right into one of my friends faces.

The best part of the story? Half of us may or may not have been completely zonked on mind-bending psychedelic drugs. (The sober amongst us later confirmed that yes, that elephant we all thought we were playing with while on acid, really was playing with us)

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

Zoo employees need to eat too.

Well, only the monkey could win, since the other guys don't have hands.
