"Clearly with the success of the Zen Micro and our shipment of more than two million MP3 players last holiday season, we have gained huge momentum and are putting our competitors on the defensive," said Hoo. "We can further drive our momentum by dropping the price of our Zen Micro MP3 players."

Maccentral:
"The new pricing strategy from Creative comes just six days after Apple announced new models and pricing of its iPod."

Now tell me, who is on the defensive?

Wong Hoo is a master of PR. He doesn't mind making a fool out of himself as long as he gets column inches in return.

my first mp3 player was a creative. and it worked well. as advertisied at any rate.

if they had brains enough to make a ipod like device, they'd be leading the market now!

But the new creative zen micro thing is a blatent ipod rip off. from the different color selections to the OS. and my cousin's 20gb creative player broke in less than a year.

I would hardly consider that "trash talk". But, Apple would be wise to be thinking at least a little defensively. They certainly don't need to be at the moment, but Apple has a habit of developing a great product and then sitting back while the rest of the industry passes them by.

I rather like the iPod the way it is. Too many other people want all this other crap in there. How about just keep it a great music player. No FM, no pictures, no clutter!!!

Now if only they would bring back Gold...

defensive or not, i admire creative's reaction time. they got out new zen micros' and price drops in only 6 days. pretty cool in my book.

imagine if apple released a 5-6 gig ipod mini in only 5-6 days of the announcement of a zen micro. creative wouldnt have sold 2 million zen's if apple had the same kinda reaction time. that ... and decent supply lines.

No trees were killed in the sending of this message. However, a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

i think the other companies are shooting themselves in the foot by adding extra crap onto their players. just look at PDAs. they added everything including my momma's mamma's sink and that market is sooo over.

After all, if a brand is dominant, it will always be.

No one would ever think of buying a portable cassette or CD player unless it said Walkman on it and virtually every refrigerator is from Frigidaire.

Wow, that doesn't bode very well for Apple's OS and Hardware departments then. Windows is a pretty dominant brand ...

I'm not saying that they should be adding extra crap onto the iPod and I agree that the iPod is excellent as it is. But at the same time, I don't think Apple should sit back and say "We've got the perfect product, nobody can touch us". So far they've been doing pretty good.

Right now, one of iPod's biggest weakness is in service; in the fall it was trimmed back a little. If other manufacturers can capitalize on that they could begin to chip away at iPod's dominance.

The other weakness is battery; yes, they just improved it, but it's already got a reputation for being flakey and people are uneasy about things that don't have user replaceable batteries; it makes them feel like they're being sold a product that gets thrown away once the battery dies. Yes, Apple will change it for you, but at a cost. Yes, you can change it yourself quite cheaply, but I would only recommend that to someone with at least a little technical experience.

You think Creative was just sitting around, talking to iRiver at the water cooler, noticed the new iPods and said "damn, guess we better get to work." All that in 6 days?

Part 1: Both iPod minis and Zens are out

Part 2: Both companies are in works to come up with a better player/price

Part 3: Apple makes a decision and goes public with it

Part 4: Creative sees it, and follows suit
