I'm interested in knowing if the iMac 2007 Digital Audio port (S/PDIF Optical Digital Audio Input can accommodate a standard optical cable or if it needs the special one made for Macbook Pro, it has an extended longer thin end?

According to MacTracker, the iMacs around that time have combo audio ports. Analog + optical, in the 3.5mm / 1/8" form. So it would take the laptop 3.5mm to standard port cable.

Sure reader50 I understand that. My inquiry is seeking to know whether the optical port inside the 3.5 analog needs a specifically designed cable like the ones used for Macbook Pros?

There is nothing "special" about those cables. You need an optical TOSLink adapter to plug into the 3.5mm mini jack.

The only Macs ever to come with dedicated larger S/PDIF sockets were the Mac Pros/PM G5, IIRC.

MBP's do not use a 'special' optical cable. All you need is a TOSLINK mini plug.
