Steve Irwin - the mad Aussie crocodile hunter - has died in the water off Port Douglas (North Queensland) due to a stingray barb

I guess if you always play with fire one day you'll get burnt

I just read the news. Sad day. I remember seeing a special with him and his family. He has two very young children, and his daughter was growing up with a love for animals. I truly hope this accident doesn't spoil his family's love of nature.

A stingray barb through the chest? WTF? Aren't stingrays small, flat fish (3 feet across) that tourists hand-feed in the Caribbean? How could one of those kill someone?

I was thinking the same thing. The guy worries about crocs and poison reptiles ... who the f- would have thought that he would be taken down by such a thing!

It's like the Enterprise-D getting blown up by a bird-of-prey ....

Hmm, they're apparently more dangerous than I realized. I just came across this:
Penetration of any part of the trunk (chest, abdomen, groin) is a serious medical emergency. Introduction of the ray's necrotizing venom directly into the body cavity of a person has been known to cause insidious necrotizing effects on the heart and other internal organs, and death is often inevitable."

Manta Rays can get 20 feet but we haven't heard the details yet.

I have to agree with WTH. I had a strong feeling he was going to meet a tragic end. Still shocking and awful.

Poor guy. Obviously not that much of a shock with his line of work (crazy aussie) but still very sad.

Wrong. Terri (Steve's wife) called my fiance's record producer, Magoo, as they were recording. And then my fiancé called to tell me.

He is survived by his wife Terri, who was believed to be exploring Cradle Mountain in Tasmania, as well as his children Bindi Sue, age 8, and Bob, age 2. They have been notified of Irwin's death.

That is damn bad. I though he could take on any creature and then he got it in the end from swimming near a Stingray.

I found this much more sad than a lot of celebrity deaths. He seemed like a rare kind of guy, and he was just getting started with his family and all that.

Not surprising, but terribly sad. From what I can tell, he was a good man and will be sorely missed.

Sad news. That guy was a loonatic but he had balls and he loved what he did. Still, he probably led a fuller life than many who die peacefully at 96.

Manta Rays aren't dangerous, but Sting Rays can be. I just watched a show about Manta Rays last week. They're quite intelligent, and docile.

If he was an idiot, what does that make someone who would fall for sensationalist media reporting. It made the news because it looked foolish, not because it is.

I was just reading an article on stingrays. They said that the sting can be extremely painful but "rarely" causes death unless the heart is punctured, a rare occurance. However thats exactly what happened here.

People get stung by stingrays quite frequently here in Florida.

Native Floridians with experience know that when you go into the water, be it the beach or brackish rivers and estuaries, you always walk slowly and shuffle your feet so that the rays have a chance to get out of the way. They are actually usually very docile. SeaWorld has a pool of them where children and adults can freely pet and touch them as they swim around.

Nevertheless, a good friend of mine, a dive physician who works for the United States navy, was telling me that stingrays can do a lot of damage to a person if the person is envenomated by one. Not only can the person have an allergic reaction producing shock, but necrotizing fascitis occurs - the tissue around the wound begins to die.

If you're going into waters where you aren't sure what lies in the sand you should always wear a pair of old sneakers or buy and use tabis which are rubber soled shoe-socks. (I got mine when I lived in Hawaii - I'm not sure where to get them on the mainland to be honest.)

I feel sorry for his wife and their children, though he did die doing what he loved, apparently.

But, to be honest, I'm surprised that he didn't meet his end while filming a segment on poisonous snakes because sometimes he sure seemed to push the envelope when it came to taunting wildlife like the snakes and crocs.
