I was chatting with some friends the other day ahead of the upcoming MacWorld and one of them asked me how many iPods I had purchased over the years. I started to count them up and realized I had just bought my 23rd.

I decided to write a story about it on my blog entitled "Cupertino - I may have a problem (see my sig if you want to read the whole thing) but thought I'd share the list. Anyone else out there in double digits yet?

1. December 2001 – My 1st!! – the Original White 5 Gig iPod
2. April 2002 – Sold my Original (I still regret selling it) and purchased the White 10 Gig iPod
3. August 2002 – Sold my 10 Gig and picked up the White 20 Gig
4. April 2003 – Upgraded my 20 Gig to the new White 20 Gig with solid state scroll wheel and four buttons
5. September 2003 – Upgraded from the 20 Gig to the White 40 Gig with solid-state scroll wheel and four buttons. This iPod still holds a special place in my heart as it represented the first time I was able to have all of my music on my iPod. At the time, I had about 32 Gigs of music.
6. February 2004 – Purchased a Green 4 Gig iPod Mini as a gift for my wife. Due to huge demand in the US, the mini was not available to be ordered in Canada yet. I purchased this iPod on E-Bay and had it shipped to a friends address in Boston and then had my friend ship it up to me.
7. April 2004 – Bought my 1st iPod Mini for myself. I ordered a Pink one online from the Apple Store. I got an E-Mail telling me that it would ship in 1-2 weeks (see below.)
8. March 2004 – I was in my local Best Buy and saw that they had a Pink Mini in stock. I bought it and rushed home to cancel my online order. Just my luck – Apple had shipped it early. I ended up selling the one that Apple shipped to me (still sealed) to a friend who was looking to buy one.
9. July 2004 – Upgraded to the white 40 Gig with Click Wheel
10. December 2004 – Upgraded to the White 60 Gig iPod Photo. This was my most expensive iPod purchase ever at $749 Canadian. I almost skipped this one but decided to treat myself after receiving a pretty sweet bonus that year.
11. January 2005 – Purchased the 512 Meg Shuffle (just because!!)
12. February 2005 – Upgraded my Mini to the new 6 Gig version
13. September 2005 – Upgraded from my mini to the new Nano (the 4 Gig version in White)
14. October 2005 – Upgraded to the White 60 Gig iPod with Video
15. April 2006 – Bought a Black 30 Gig iPod with Video as a gift for my wife
16. June 2006 – Bought a 1 Gig White Nano for my father-in-law as a Birthday gift
17. July 2006 – Bought a 1 Gig White Nano for myself. (I was convinced that new Nano would be announced in the June timeframe so I had recently sold my 4 Gig version. When Apple and Nike came out with the Nike+ system though, I had to pick up a small Nano just so I could use their new running system until the new line of Nanos arrived.)
18. September 2006 – Upgraded to the Black 80 Gig iPod Video
19. September 2006 – Upgraded to the new 2nd Generation Nano (a 4 Gig Pink one)
20. October, 2006 – I decided that the new Product Red Nano was much cooler than my Pink one so I upgraded to the 4 Gig Red Nano.
21. December 2006 – Bought a White 30 Gig iPod with Video as a Christmas gift for my parents
22. December 2006 – I purchased a 1 Gig 2nd Generation Shuffle for a local United Way Charity Silent Auction. (It sold for more than I paid for it!)
23. December 2006 – I decided to purchase the new 1 Gig 2nd Generation for myself too.

I thought I was doing really well when I finally got an iPod for each of us at home-that's three iPods. For the record, our stash is 1) a 20GB Photo iPod, 2) a 60GB Photo iPod, and3) an 8GB second generation Nano (in black, of course).

Twenty-three iPods! Just WOW!

You want to relive some of that nostalgia? I have a 2nd gen 10gb firewire ipod I'll sell you. I was looking to upgrade

I've bought 6 I think:

10gb 2nd gen
1gb nano for 13yr old son
30gb video for wife
512mb shuffle for 5yr old son
1gb nano for 7yr old son
2gb nano for me with nike+

We also have a 3yr old daughter, maybe I should get one for her?

I'm looking to get one of those 30gb video refurbs soon. 30gb is plenty for me. Hell, I've never filled up my 10giger yet.I have enough to fill it but don't see the need to carry around a ton of music I'll probably never listen to.

Now I'm on a mac buying spree.

Bought a mini in June (first mac)
Bought wife a macbook in July
Bought kids a G3 iMac for surfing the web (should be here tomorrow)

Would love to get myself a macbook too, but probably won't.

Thanks for the digg

No cats - they make me sneeze. I have a 5 year old who knows how to use the iPods but prefers to listen to iTunes while looking at her baby pictures in iPhoto.

One other story just came to mind...

Remember a few years ago when Steve Jobs was on the cover of Time Magazine? The picture was leaked online before the magazine came out. I read about it on this website over that weekend, knew that it meant that a new model was about to be released, and immediately posted my current iPod on e_Bay with a buy-it-now price that was snapped up. Something like 2-3 days later, I was able to buy the new iPod for within $15 of what my old one had sold for

I bought a 4G for my dad the day they came out. I actually bought a 3g for him for his bday, but knew they were coming out with new ones so I told him not to open it.
I also bought a 2G 6g mini for myself the day they came out.

I don't think I could ever justify buying that many iPods. I purchased the 2nd Gen iPod 10GB (i think when the series first switched to the innovative touch scroller), than I later sold the model to a friend and purchased a 4GB iPod mini (2nd Gen) green. I almost purchased a new iPod this Boxing Day, however I decided to wait it out a little bit longer. If the black iPod nano dropped in price, I'd probbaby bite

23 ipods? I don't understand, what drives you to buy so many? Is the previous generation really that different? Dropping another few hundred because one has a different color? You are the poster boy for consumerism.

That's funny. Here's my track record:

Original iPod. Hard drive died.

Purchased another drive, but it was already dead.

2nd gen ipod. Hard drive died.

3rd gen iPod. Hard drive died.

4th gen iPod. Hard drive died.

Needless to say I'm never buying one again with a hard drive. F*** that.

Never thought I'd get the response to my posting that I did. Since yesterday morning, upwards of 1800 people have read my iPod story in addition to all of the comments here. I'm pretty surprised to say the least.

Here's hoping for a full screen video iPod next week at MacWorld

digg - Cupertino, I may have a problem (guy buys 23 Apple iPods over 5 years)
There was a link to your story on the MacAddict home page, so its getting around. You should milk it more. Maybe you could use it somehow to get a ticket to Steve's keynote if you don't already have one.

Well, I will use the excuse of having these in the house because of the six kids. Some of these purchases would not have been made if they were not replacing stolen/damaged/dead iPods.

Okay, I will see if I remember ...

1. 1st Gen 5G iPod (21 yr old son) (Stolen in Las Vegas...let me know if you find it! )
2. 3rd Gen 10G iPod (21 yr old son, replacing stolen iPod)
3. 2nd Gen 4G iPod Mini (Silver) (for me, then later my wife)
4. 1st Gen 4G iPod Mini (Pink) (19 yr old daughter)
5. 1st Gen 1G iPod Shuffle (for me, then my 13 yr old son)
6. 1st Gen 4G iPod Mini (Green) (17 yr old daughter)
7. 2nd Gen 4G iPod Mini (Silver) (24 yr old son) (Did not survive a trip thru the wash)
8. 2nd Gen 6G iPod Mini (Silver) (replaced extra clean Mini, above)
9. 5th Gen 30G iPod Video (Black) (died after ~ 3 months)
10. 5th Gen 30G iPod Video (Black) (dead out of the box!)
11. 5th Gen 30G iPod Video (Black) (died after ~ 1 month)
12. 5th Gen 30G iPod Video (Black) (still alive - yeah!)
13. 1st Gen 1G iPod Nano (White) (purchased refurbed, just so I could use Nike + iPod)
14. 1st Gen 2G iPod Nano (Black) (24 yr old Nike + iPod machine)
15. 2nd Gen 4G iPod Mini (Blue) (11 yr old son)

Man, with all that iPod lovage, you need, and I do mean NEED, to go check out the Kenpo iPod jackets.

I'm on iPod lucky number 7, with my 5G 60 gig, andd the jacket's are great.

Even my dad, a new iPod user, has one. It's the coolest iPod case to date.

i'm not sure how to create links here, but the URl is:

Only one common denominator (as the HDs in each are different)...You.

You must be rough on your iPods!

I've bought 6 over the years and other than the headphone jack on my very first 5GB ipod being somewhat loose, all run beautifully.

I personally have only owned one, a 1st Gen 4GB Silver Mini. Although I did purchased a new 2nd Gen Shuffle for my nephew. I am looking forward to possibly getting a big beautiful iPod at MacWorld!

I just don't get it. Why carry something that expensive & heavy around?

I use a little white Virgin mp3 player in the gym, weighs about 20g. Cost about £30 a year ago. Come to think of it, it looks like Apple copied it when they brought out that square thingy.... shuffle?

I don't have to mess about with playlists in itunes either. I drag and drop mp3s straight into it.

I'm not flamming, but you guys sound like a marketing man's dream!

I bought a 10GB iPod 3G off eBay last year.
Then I bought an iPod nano (Black 1G) on Zune Launch Day just because.

Hmm.. I've had two. (Three if I end up getting an iPhone.) And I don't even listen to music while I'm out. Seriously. I don't even know why I need them.

Wow, and I felt guilty about ever having owned two:

4 GB Silver Mini - Hard drive died about two weeks in
20 GB 4th Gen - Still going strong!

It was fun convincing the guy at the Apple store to let me upgrade from a Mini to the full-sized 4G. Ended up just paying the difference in price between the two instead of getting a replacement Mini.

Any ramblings are entirely my own, and do not represent those of my employers, coworkers, friends, or species

Yes - I'll be buying an iPhone as soon as they are available in Canada. My guess is I'll be lucky to have one by the end of the year though as the GSM carriers in Canada usually wait 1/2 year after a US launch to make a phone available.

I'm hoping that I can get a 6G iPod that's identical to the iPhone but without the phone functionality and with a large hard drive MUCH sooner.

Anong others, I think it would appeal to the following types of users:

(1) People who for one reason or another don't want to switch to Cingular. Perhaps they are locked into a plan with another carrier or simply don't get reliable service in their area.

(2) People who have a corporate issued BlackBerry device who don't need a second phone number and who must retain their BlackBerry for work related reasons.

(3) People who want to purchase NOW. No mobile should mean no FCC approval (or a much faster approval process.)

(4) An immediate international audience. No separate carrier agreements means that Apple could sell these internationally as quickly as they could make them.

For more info, I recently posted a longer article on my blog.
