I've finally had this start biting me. Been looking for discussions on it (on non-apple-controlled forums), but so far in vain so I thought I'd start one here.

The symptom is that periodically (maybe once every few minutes, depending on how much activity I'm putting the machine through, though it also seems to vary from person to person), the console informs me that fix_prebinding has crashed. It doesn't SEEM to have any terminal ill-effects (at least in my case), but since I don't know from where fix_prebinding is being executed, I can't know for certain. The crash report involves minor variations on the below:

Date/Time: 2003-01-03 15:52:22 -0800
OS Version: 10.2.3 (Build 6G30)

Command: fix_prebinding
PID: 593

Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0x000001c1

There seems to be a little bit of knowledge and experiences being thrown around on the discussion pages of Apple's support site (go to http://discussions.info.apple.com and search for "fix_prebinding"), but so far no one there seems to have come up with a consistent workaround. So far, it seems to be limited to 10.2.3, and the obvious attempt to fix it (manually updating all the prebinding) doesn't appear to work in most cases.

Anyone here seen this and have any information on it?

To add some more info into the public record... in my case, it started happening after a rather suspicious occurrence in which BBEdit (6.5.3) hung on me. I then tried to force-quit it, and it took two tries (I'm not sure what that means, exactly, but after the first try, the app name turned red in the force-quit window, but the app still seemed to be running. A second force-quit finally caused it to terminate.) However, subsequent attempts to launch BBEdit resulted in crashes (unfortunately, I failed to save the logs for those.) I then rebooted. After the reboot, BBEdit launched fine, but I started to see this fix_prebinding crash.

I have tried manually updating the prebinding with no success. There is also the possibility that, in my case, the crashes are related to my BBEdit installation. I have not tried reinstalling BBEdit yet (I suppose that's next in line to try.) However, from reading posts on Apple's discussion board, it seems that the crashes may be "associated" with other application installations for other people, so I seriously doubt it's a BBEdit-specific bug.

I have read that this is not necessary with 10.2.

It's unnecessary because it does it automatically. If it's broken, the the autoprebinding will be broken to (afaik).

I won't pretend to fully understand the prebinding process and who decides when it runs, but as far as I can tell, this fix_prebinding thing that's crashing IS 10.2's auto-prebinding.
