Do you want to see what people's resumes look like, or do you want to actually read the resumes?

My actual resume is bla, but everyone I apply to only cares about the portfolio anyway.

What type of word do you do or want to do? I volunteered work for years at first just to build a resume.

Showing your work in a portfolio is much more important than the resume.

Getting a design job for a newspaper isn't easy. You have to have a pretty good resume and a very good portfolio. The portfolio is the most important part. The resume should be clean, orderly, 1 page and thorough.

The market is rough for designers right now. You can ussualy get your foot in the door doing ad layouts for smaller local papers. A lot of them seem to be hiring all the time.

Other then that, make yourself a strong portfolio. Don't have one? Make one up. That's what I did. I just started playing around and made a whole bunch of fake layouts for whatever. Just do your best to show off your skills in a wide variety of areas. I didn't have any formal background so I had to go that route to get my foot in the door. I lucked out and got a job with my fake book.

It doesn't matter if it's fake. It's probably better that way, since most of the designs I do nowadays get screwed over by the client.

It's not always that easy. There are about two people between me and the client. I gave up a long time ago. I don't care anymore. I'm their little design monkey and that's that. If I cared, I would just drive myself crazy.

This place is a sweatshop anyway. No one could produce good work under conditions like this. I need to get out, but the market is horrible right now. I'm thankful to just be employed.

Sorry. I assumed you would have contact with your client. It seems pretty sweatshopish to me to have to work that way. If you can't defend your ideas, they're pretty much asking for you not to care about what you do. But hey, if its making your company money, I guess thats all that matters, right?

Here's mine: http://www.shadesofblack.org/resume_safe.pdf (Addresses & phone numbers changed, of course.) It's a bit odd because it's written to fit my adviser's requirements for the job fair she conducts every semester for her students... and she's a bit quirky (having been in the field since the 50's, however, she's earned her quirks.)

While I'm still in college with an interest in the field, I'm 99% sure I'm going to have to slog it out in the trenches as a reporter until I can luck into a page design or photographer's slot. (At least in the media market around Richmond/Central Virginia.)

If you don't mind a couple of comments. If would be better if you could keep it to one page. The second page is just too short.

Also, try and differentiate some of the lines, maybe make bold the lines with position/paper/years on it. Otherwise, it just looks too grey.

Also, your school is all caps which differs from the rest of the resume. I'd also leave off the periods at the end of the position/paper/years line

Yeah. I'm re-writing it for non-school use, as I said, this was written to very specific guidelines (some of which I don't agree with, but hey.) Her rationale, as a vet newspaper editor, is that most editors don't really care about the "pretty" resumes, it just has to look clean with the relevant information readily avaliable and be free of errors. The cover letter and your portfolio is what really matters. That and the references, I'm still amazed at how much of getting a newspaper job isn't what you can do so much as who you know.

I was putting it up more as an example of the kinds of work you do in a college journalism program.... probably should have specified that. :-\

But thanks for the advice, I plan on cleaning it up, so that helps.

Are you talking resumes that LOOK nice or you just need an idea for content?

As I mentioned before mine looks bland but nobody cares cuz all they want to see is the name dropping of companies/clients and view a portfolio.

(I haven't updated it for over a year though)

Templates are definitely a BAD idea if you are applying for any sort of design job. Other than that is it up to you but try to use something uncommon.

Do not use templates when you make up your resume, it shows that you are lazy and have no imagination. Do not use chronological but functional instead. An employer does not want to read on page 2 of a qualification you have they want to read it on page one, do not be afraid to explain in details what you can do.

This isn't for a design job, that's just the point.

I absolutely hate writing resumés/CVs, and I'm looking to apply at a job that has very little to do with my previous line of work.

For starters:

- Give the header some "breathing space" (looks a bit cramped)
- Scratch the underline
- Stick to one "type of" font
- Start with your work experience (nobody cares about your education until you graduated)
- Let the lists start at the end of the "longest" topic (work experience)

I usually make a new résumé each time I apply for a new job, leaving out the more irrelevant aspects of the résumé as I go along.

The latest one I’ve used (successfully) is this one (the first page is the application for the job itself, the second page is the résumé).

It probably doesn’t help anyone here much, since this is a Danish CV (which is not the same as an American CV), and is thus made on somewhat different principles than the other ones in this thread. For many things, I’m sure a résumé such as this one would be thrown straight in the waste-paper bin by many American bosses, ’cause it would be all wrong for them; over here, however, it got me the job on the spot.

Well of course it's wrong for them, it's not in English

SWG: I went ahead and changed "boss's" to "Minnie's owner's." Any other suggestions?

Change freshman guys to freshmen. Avoid casual speech.

Also I don't think any of the terms should be Freshman, as it is plural, so Freshmen instead.

Didn't you see my address on there? It's 'street, city.'

But seriously, thanks guys for the help. I'm heading to the career fair in a couple hours, and I'm researching companies to talk to now. ISU is supposed to have one of the top engineering career fairs in the nation. It completely fills their Coliseum plus another building, so it's huge. Hopefully I can pull in an internship or co-op.

As someone mentioned above, get rid of the underline on the headers. Just up the font one point as not to compete with the sub-headers.

Also, I don't believe the shifts for each job are necessary, if an employer wants that information he'll ask during an interview, otherwise they'll just assume it was fulltime.

And as far as I'm concerned I would never want to see ANY colour on a resume, so get rid of the red, if you were planning to print it that way. That's what Bold, and Italics are for, to make things prominent. Also, try to stick to the same font styles for the same elements, you have italics/bold used on some sub headers, and some sub header elements, but not others. All or nothing I like to say.

Personally, I feel italics, and underline are tacky. I stick to bold and plain text, and only use italics with plain text, never bold text, just makes it feel off somehow.

Looks better, again, change the size of either the headers or sub-headers, they're competing against each other for focus.
