I have a bunch of photos I sync to my iPhone/iPad using iTunes/iPhoto.
What can I do to add *additional* photos to my phone that I don't wish to keep in my iPhoto library? (other than cloud solutions that I don't trust for personal photos)
Any ideas?

Well, Apple's documentation indicates that you can use a folder or iPhoto, but not both.
Sorry, dude. You might be out of luck.
(P.S. In Android, any photo gallery app or photo editor can access any images stored on the entire device...)

It's fine. I didn't think it was possible, but I figured I'd bounce it off my peers here to see if anyone had an idea.
The Android idea won't work, as I won't be able to sync my iPhoto libraries. (Unless I export them first)

You could always use a photo management application that doesn't require storing multiple copies of your photos in a proprietary file structure that is difficult to access without using proprietary Mac-only software.
Also, FWIW, your iPhoto "library" is actually a directory with a special parameter that tells OS X to open it in iPhoto instead of Finder. You can Ctrl+click
(or right click or two-finger-click) on it and hit "show contents" to view the file structure. Your photos are in there.
ETA: if you're interested in investigating alternatives, a quick Google search came up with this:

Pixa looks pretty awesome for $30.

Thanks. I do appreciate it. But, I actually like iPhoto. I've been using it since the first version (years of photos in it!) I'm aware of it's file structure.
I actually tried switching to a PC once, but found nothing over there for photos that I could live with, so I came back to the Mac. I tried Picassa and hated it.
At this point, I don't want to move my photo library. (I have several thanks to the iPhoto Library Manager). It just works well for me.
Except for this shortcoming, I've been very happy with it.
