Pictures or it didn't happen. Oh wait, how can you take pictures of your iPhone with your iPhone...
Nevermind.

Plugged the iPad in and iTunes says it's up-to-date. It's running 4.2. I guess Apple staggers the updates?

I'm not seeing any wondermous and fantabulous improvements. Now the hot-spot feature sounds pretty nice, but I'd have preferred to have AirPrint work on networked printers, not just certain HP printers.

It appears that the Safari page reloading issue is gone. I have 8 pages open and not one has reloaded when I've switched around between them.
Edit: Never mind. Immediately after posting, it started refreshing pages again. Gah.

That's not up to Apple.
The ePrint protocol is something like PostScript - a generic page description that allows driverless printing, provided the receiving device knows the language.
Only HP has implemented it so far.

Ah. I didn't know it was a protocol thing. But that makes it much more understandable than "only allow connection to these printers."

It seems that AT&T wants 50% more for a data plan that allows hot-spot connections. And that plan would permanently end my unlimited data plan. It's cool, but not that cool.

The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

Really ?
It's funny, because the folks over here can activate Airprint for *any* printer on the Mac in 20 seconds. No new printer drivers needed. Works as advertised.

Safari feels as slow as ever on my iOS 4.3 iPhone 4. It's supposed to be faster, but I don't really notice the difference, at least for the few sites I've visited.

Just ask it to check for an update.

I wonder if Epson can do it, as their wireless print app for the iPhone is totally braindead. It essentially just prints a screengrab, and doesn't even fill the page. Completely useless.

Yep. Very nice. Much simpler than the Bluetooth option.
I wonder how it picks the personal passwords. My default one was "mucky3067". What I don't like is it won't hide the password when you type in a new one. That's for iOS 4.4 I guess. You can't change the SSID either, and you can't have a hidden SSID.

Tethering is included as part of the data packages here locally, no extra fees.

Yeah, same in Canada. You have to have a minimum 1 GB plan with my carrier, but if you have a 1 GB plan or larger, tethering support is no extra cost.
Not only have I used it on the road to avoid hotel internet charges, I've had to use it several times at home. It seems my 25 down 7 up Mbps home VDSL2 internet is not so reliable. It's gone down a few times when I was supposed to be telecommuting. I guess I'll be switching to cable next month.

Easy for you guys, tethering is a natural resource in Hong Kong in Canada. We have to import it into the US.

I did. But tells me 4.2 is the latest version and that I'm up-to-date. I've confirmed the latest iTunes is installed (10.2.1). It's not that big an issue. Just find it odd. This isn't the first time it has happened. Maybe something to do with my location?

That's only for shared printers connected to a Mac. I don't believe it works on networked printers.

OK, that kinda sucks, but then again, it should be good enough for me. I have one USB monochrome Samsung laser printer connected to a Mac, and a networked colour Epson inkjet fax/scanner/printer.

Weird. FWIW, I don't own an iPad. The iOS 4.3 was for my iPhone.

That's for shared printers.
Glenn was asking about networked printers.
I agree that Apple should allow AirPrint to shared printers, if possible. That should be within their domain.
Adding AirPrint to networkable printers, however, is not.

Benches don't support my contention, but it may be because of the sites I visited. (It wasn't the network because it was super fast on my desktop when it was run in parallel with the iPhone.)
Daring Fireball's benches:
SunSpider 0.9.1 Benchmark (Smaller Is Better)
Device (OS) Time
iPad 1 (4.2) 8103 ms
iPad 1 (4.3) 3340 ms
iPad 2 (4.3) 2161 ms
The iOS 4.2 -> iOS 4.3 change is huge, but the iPad 1 to iPad 2 speedup is also huge. Nice.

You are right, I failed to differentiate between those two.
For most home users, the shared printer route will work though, even if you only have 1 Mac.

It's on my iPhone.
Lock screen slider feels different. A swipe that would previously unlock the phone now slides the button all the way over, but then it snaps back. It took me six tries to unlock my phone.
If I aim a little lower than my "muscle memory", it works normally. Weird.

Weird. I used to have that problem, until I trained myself to swipe differently. Annoying but it solved the problem.
I didn't notice a recurrence of this with iOS 4.3.

Yeah, you don't have to jailbreak the device. The ONLY reason I ever considered jailbreaking was for this functionality, but instead I just carried around the USB cable all the time with my laptop. (Bluetooth was hit and miss.)
P.S. I didn't know MyWi was free.
EDIT:
Everywhere I look it says MyWi costs money, but it does say there is a free trial.

I should have said that mywi's cost is one time. If it is true that personal hotspot throttles speeds, that puts one check in the mywi column.
What tethering system were you using with your USB cable, eug?
For the record, jailbreaking is quite easy

If I can do basic surfing at a decent speed then I don't really care if the max 3G data speed is capped. I'll have to try it though to see what happens. The speed didn't seem much different than using the USB cable, but I just tested it very briefly.

The one built into iOS. I'm on Fido (which is a subsidiary of Rogers) in Canada.
On iOS 4 the default was to offer Bluetooth and USB tethering. With the iOS 4.3 update, I now get the option for WiFi as well.
Previous iOS:
iOS 4.3:

Except it's a PITA that you have to do it with every single OS release.

On Fido, for any plan at 1 GB/month or over, tethering is included at no extra charge. I think one main reason they don't offer it on a 500 MB plan is because it's far too easy to go over the limit.
500 MB is $25.
1 GB is $30 per month, but you can often negotiate a $10 discount through their account retentions dept.
They also have that retentions-only $30 plan for 6 GB, but I don't think they allow discounts on it anymore. (Their regular price for 5 GB is $65.)
Here is my current plan:
200/Unl. E/WE+Eve. 5pm 17.50
Credit: $10 Data Discount -10.00
3Y Data option 1GB 30.00
100 text messages 0.00
iPhone Value Pack 10.00
Tethering Access 0.00
Evenings starting at 5 p.m. 7.00
Credit: Eve. Start. at 5 p.m. Cr. -7.00
Minute Tracker 0.00
Other charges and credits
Credit: Better Choice Bundles 5% Disc -1.88
Total before taxes: $46.52

Looks cheaper than AT&T and verizon. Part of me wanted to run mywi as a form of protest since tethering costs $20/month or something here.

Yeah, if it's an extra $20 per month just to tether, then that's highway robbery.

You know that there is NO sure way to hide from the ISP that you're tethering ?
If you do it w/o subscribing to their explicit plan, they could slap you with high overages and terminate your account.

From what I've heard, there's no way for them to tell that you're tethering, aside from a possible increase in traffic.

At least buying the $20 tethering option would double your data from 2 GB to 4 GB now, instead of making you use the same 2 GB for both that AT&T did before. But that is still $15 more than the "unlimited" which I think had a "soft limit" of 5 GB.

One thing I've noticed about iOS 4.3 is that Apple moved the Location Services preferences out of whatever tab it used to be under to the main Settings screen. Probably to emphasize that people can pick and choose which apps get access to your location or not. My guess is that the preference was buried and people couldn't find it very easily.
Oh, and FaceTime got a new icon that more closely resembles the icon on the FaceTime application for the Mac.

Deep packet inspection - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I don't think they do this now, but they have the technology to do it. Inspecting payload would clearly identify non-iPhone browser user agents, true flash content streamed to a web browser, and more.

Aside from Deep Packet Inspection, every browser identifies itself uniquely. Few people will have their desktop browser user agent changed to pretend to be Mobile Safari.
And then there are a host of other OS X processes that will leave unique footprint.
Really, it's easy to know someone's tethering.

Hmmm… I wasn't aware the 3G was left out of the iOS 4.3 goodness. That's too bad, since it could REALLY do with a Safari speedup.

Has anyone noticed a speed bump in iPhone4 download speeds over wi-fi? Mine is doing over 15MB and even over 10MB uploads now. Before, it could not.

I really doubt that it makes financial sense to inspect packets to look for rogue tethers just as it doesn't make sense for a company like Comcast to monitor illegal filesharing
