It seems every agrees that the iPod is cool (not groundbreaking) but not at $399.
If Apple realizes that it should be say $299, how do they change the price without looking foolish. They must have learned their lesson with the Cube. It took them way too long to lower the price (or did they ever?)

I can't see Jobs saying, "Uh...it seems we couldn't pull the wool over your eyes. We're now lowering the iPod by $100"l

Orders are now being taken and I suspect it would be difficult to refund $100 to everyone who has preordered.

What are you talking about?

I want you to find me a 5 GB combo MP3 player and FireWire drive the size of a pack of cards for less than $400 US.

Is there a USB<->FireWire converter?
I ask this for one reason: digital cameras.

This could be THE best digital photo accessory out there - simply dump all your photos onto the iPod when your expensive SmartMedia card gets all full.
However, most cameras use USB to sync to a computer...

My head is spinning with this and a digital Canon S300... one in one pocket, one in another, take absolutely as many pictures as you can stand! Woo!

you know what... you want one for free? Go steal one... Gimme a call from jail listening to your brand new iPod...

Besides... retailers are probably taking orders, the device is leaving warehouses soon, I think its kinda late to make any last minute moves...

Sounds like you need one of these: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nixvuedigitalalbum/

Or one of these (old review price is prob lower now): http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/digitalwallet/

Happy snapping
P.S. I empty 3 batteries and I still can't fill my 1GB Microdrive in my Nikon 995. Haven't got to the 650 pic mark yet

I have a dumb question. I have over 1000 songs in my mp3 collection.. If it transfers the mp3's automatically wouldn't that make it harder to move the songs I want to? Otherwise the price is a little high but it seems to be the best thing going. I just got an Archos 6 gb player which I will use for a while. I just found an OS X driver for it so I won't change any time soon.

I recently bought a Archos 6000 from my buddy for a $100 bucks, I knew about the announcement, but like everyone else I didn't know what it was going to be, and wouldn't you know it Apple releases their own Jukebox player.......crrraaaapppp, oh well thats technology I guess.

Anyway I think the iPod is going to go BIG: 5gb of space for data and songs, firewire transfer, small foot print, rechargeable lithum battery, intergraded with iTunes 2...need I say more. Yeah, the price is higher than the high-end Nomad or other Jukebox players but this is what (along with a New Newton) Mac users have been waiting for, finally a digital device made by Apple-for-Apple. Macs are definitely becoming "The digital hub" that Jobs wants them to be, and who knows maybe the price will drop for X-Mas and I can give my Archos to my wife.

Also PHoynak, were did you find the OS X driver for the Archos 6000?

Jobs can do whatever he wants. That's been obvious when the Cube was announced. But then he backtreded and tried to make changes. By then it was too late. I'm afraid the same thing will happen with iPod. UNLESS he makes modifications quickly as in the next couple weeks. It would be a good PR deal.

Also it would be cool if they would come up with a packaged deal for an iPod with an iBook.

I know...I just bought an Archos also . If I had only known about this I would buy it. The Archos is a little big for your pocket. Maybe if I sell it....

Did anyone happen to read the FAQ? You can drop a SYSTEM FOLDER on it and boot any firewire equipped Macintosh Computer. I want to see your Rio 500 do that...*smile*

I think once people understand what this thing can do the negative comments will really subside.

People are almost looking at the iPod as though Apple is waaay overpricing them and making a huge profit from these babies. And you know what..? thats wrong. Does anyone know how much those mini 5gb HD's cost? They cost almost as much as the iPod itself costs.

Do I think its priced too high? Yes. Do I think its overpiced? No. Apple could essentially make a larger MP3 player, with the same type of HD as all the other mp3 players use, for less. Apple made a tough decision, and It'll be interesting to see if its successfull or not.

BTW, I think XLR8yourmac has some info on the pricing of the HD's used in the iPod. Check it out here.

Ben

Oh... I'd loooove to own one of these players. Very cool, but I just dont have the money.

Isnt the only form of buying something from the apple stores using a credit card, and can't you refund money easily using plastic?

Also, retailers , if they have taken depostists, can be like... "hey, you dont hvae to pay all that scrilla"

Rarely do I get a chance to skool someone who is obviously so new to this but...

Refunds are ridiculously easy on credit cards. Easier than cash.
