airport hogging CPU

Every so often, I notice my macbook running hot and the fans blowing full speed. I look in the activity monitor, and I see airport going to 99.9% CPU usage, what the???
Usually this happens when I'm not home, but roaming around connecting to some open network. Well I'm already connected to one, signal is strong, why would airport do something like that?
Usually I can fix it temporarily by going in the network prefs, and taking the network I'm currently connected to to the top of the list of preferred networks and restarting airport.
Is there a more reliable way though? This really kills my battery :S

Umm, what is the process called? To my knowledge there is no 'airport' process.

I had the same exact problem...I was running APE and ShapeShifter...uninstalled and the problem was gone.

I had a similar problem with my MBP. Did an archive and install to fix the issue.

Not running APE or Shapeshifter. Never even considered running them.
CATS CEO: There's indeed an airport process that I can see in the activity monitor. It's not always there though, but it definitely is there when I get this problem. I think it has somethign to do with automatically scanning for the best network to connect to, cause it always disappears after I fix the list of preferred networks.
I guess I'll try an archive and reinstall... Thought this kind of solution wasn't necessary for OS X though

yes there is. Its called "airport"
Its a really annoying bug, I resolved it by: Joining wifi airport, turning airport off, restarting, and the rejoining the airport network.
No idea if it was just coincidence that it fixed it.
