What aggravation! Daughter is enrolling at UNC-Greensboro, which has just installed its new "eSpartan" *** LOTUS-based *** email system.

It ONLY works via web. Not even Outlook, let alone Mail App.

Either UNC-G sold its IT soul to M$ or the whole package (provided by MS) requires that the web mail be accessed through IE. It SORT OF works via IE for Mac. The eSpartan webmail page SAYS IE is only supported browser (them monopolies gotta protect themselves). The help desk says that actually Mozilla should work. So I can try FireFox... but I really didn't want to be tech support for TWO browsers if possible.

1) Anybody there at UNCG to consult?
2) Is this a case where I should research how to make Safari SEEM to be IE? And anybody experienced "Lotus-based" email systems to know if that'll work?

Thanks!

Try to change the browser ID. And send an email to the person that authorised this system and to whoever is in charge of the university, and tell them firmly and politely that they suck for implementing this new system. Universities shouldn't use proprietary systems.

Safari Enhancer will enable the Debug menu that lets you choose the user agent.

But it'd be a lot easier to just let your daughter run Firefox for email. Heck, she could run Firefox as her primary browser: it's slightly more compatible than Safari anyway.

P.S. Lotus is an IBM product, not MS. It's in direct competition with MS Exchange.

I think I may recommend she do that, Tooki. It's now not even seeming that FoxFire is not even triggering the "Must use IE" message from her email site.

Strange about Lotus & IBM: why would they offer a setup that requires the opening web page say, "IE required" rather than supporting MS.

There's also a Lotus client for the mac if the school offers direct client access for email. My office uses and while it's a joke of an email client, I have to give points to IBM for producing a client that sucks equally on the mac as windows. At least they didn't make the mac version suck more.

It's a PITA to find the client tho'. Let me know if you need/want it.

Is this just a UNCG thing or will all of UNC be forced to use this? At NCSA (a subsidiary of UNC) we have a web based email service also, but it works with Safari. About 75% of the student body uses Macs. I wish I could use Mail.app...

That'd be great, Q... Somewhere I can download it?

I don't think it's beyond UNCG (being called "eSpartan") - totally inconceivable that Chapel Hill would put up with such ^%$@# .
