Yes, folks, I've found a cookie, in MacOS X.

The only previous cookie I remember seeing is DP3's alt-ctrl-del cookie, but this one is different...

if you type in the terminal:

pico /usr/standalone/ppc/bootx.bootinfo

You are presented with 3 ASCII logo's of MacOS X, the 3rd one being blank.

I hate to break this to you but that isnt an easter egg, its just the badge icon that appears when you hold down Option at startup. that has been there since OS X Server.

Actually, considering where it is and what it is, my guess is that it's not actually an easter egg. Those are labled as OS badge icons. I would expect that is the icon that shows up over the image of a hard drive when you boot into the boot loader by holding down the option key.

Yes, those are the icons used by the graphical boot-chooser utility you get by holding down option on startup on Core99 & newer Macs. They also exist on OS 8 & 9 in the Mac OS ROM file.

The first one is the normal icon, the second is the selected version, and the third is a mask. You can edit them by removing the newline characters and pasting the raw data into an 'ics8' resource.

Keep looking around and you'll find the "happy Mac" startup icon buried in an OS X file somewhere. I had fun replacing that with a NeXT logo on one of my Public Beta machines last fall.

Sorry, I haven't found it yet. Besides, is the appearance of the spinning rainbow cursor really what you find "evil"? Or is it the fact that you see it so much?

To get the OS-BADGE-ICONS into ics8 format, copy a square "ascii picture" into something like BBEdit so you can strip the return/newline characters out, then paste all 512 characters into an ics8 resource in something like ResEdit or Resorceror. (You'll have to edit the ics8 resource "as Hex" instead of using the graphical editor in order to paste in the raw hex data.) When you're done editing it, view the resource as hex again, copy it out, in put a newline after every 32 characters, and paste it back into the file you got it from.
