I utilize cmd-shift-4 quite often and then drag the resulting image into my “Stuff” folder to to archive it after I am done with my screenshot.
The problem is that this folder already contains at least one Picture 1.png or Picture 2.png so I have to rename it to something random before I drag it into the folder.
Since that’s pretty annoying I wonder if there’s a way to make OS X give the recorded screenshots a random name — something like “ak2xjbs.png” instead of “Picture 1.png” would do just fine.
I’ve found Sharpshooter which would at least speed up the renaming process a bit but I’m going to pay $15 for that application.

Why not just set your screenshots to automatically go into a screenshots folder? This way it will always name it the next picture X.extension name.
You can use Onyx to change the location.

I’ve done that now although I would have preferred the random name.
Thanks.

I made an Automator action to append the filename with the date it was created to solve that problem.

Would you mind elaborating on how you did this? I poked through Automater a little and didn't find anything specially pertinent to screen caps.

Sweet, thanks a lot!
Update: I’ve actually managed to modify the script so it renames it to a pseudorandom name and it works great.
If anyone is interested in the steps needed to have the above Folderaction rename screenshots to a random name with letters from A-z I can put the steps up here.
Once again thanks for pointing out the Folderaction/Automator approach, Jens.

you could actually go one step further and create an action to take the screen shot, save to location x and change the name, so it did it everything you took a screen shot, wouldnt have to run the action afterwards
