China's white dolphin called extinct after 20 million years - CNN.com

Overfishing and water trafic. Sigh.

It was unique as the oldest living mammalian species, with fossil records dating back as far as 20 million years.

Alright. Now this is what I call progress. How many more ocean-dwelling species we got on the endangered list? Pretty soon the seas will be all ours and those pesky dolphins and whales will know, know, who the superior mammal species is . . . humans. for extinction!
One should never stop striving for clarity of thought and precision of expression.
I would prefer my humanity sullied with the tarnish of science rather than the gloss of religion.

20,000,000 years flushed down the toilet all in the name of economics and development. In part a result of overpopulation... see how having babies isn't a beautiful thing, it's an ugly deathly thing.... Of course most ideology worshiping people in america don't care about the extinguishing of life; they care more about a scratch on their truck. If something were to threaten ford's existence then that would be a violation of Ford's right to life.

Here is a few other animals on the critical endangered list (expected to be extinct in the next few years if not already)

* De Winton's Golden Mole (Cryptochloris wintoni)
* Clarke's gazelle
* Barbary sheep
* Babirusa
* Marsh deer
* Gaur
* Yak
* Takin
* Wild goat
* East caucasian tur
* Serow
* Taiwan serow
* Jentink's duiker
* Abbott's duiker
* Banded duiker
* Thorold's deer
* Swamp deer
* Brow-antlered deer
* Beira antelope
* Dorcas gazelle
* Idmi
* Red-fronted gazelle
* Soemmerring's gazelle
* Speke's gazelle
* Goitered gazelle
* Himalayan tahr
* Hippopotamus
* Silver dik-dik (Madoqua piacentinii)
* Siberian musk deer (Moschus moschiferus)
* Black muntjac (Muntiacus crinifrons)
* Red goral (Naemorhedus baileyi)
* Chinese goral (Naemorhedus caudatus)
* Argali (Ovis ammon)
* Mouflon (Ovis orientalis)
* Southern pudu (Pudu puda)
* Philippine warty pig (Sus philippensis)
* Chousingha (Tetracerus quadricornis)
* Red Wolf (Canis rufus)
* Iberian Lynx (Lynx pardinus)
* Mediterreanean Monk Seal (Monachus monachus)
* Darwin's Fox (Pseudalopex fulvipes)
* California Channel Island Fox (Urocyon littoralis)
* Malabar Civet (Viverra civettina)
* Florida Panther
* Chinese River Dolphin (Lipotes vexillifer)
* Cochito (Phocoena sinus)
* Blue-Billed Curassow (Crax alberti)
* Djibouti Francolin (Francolinus ochropectus)
* Gorgeted Wood-Quail (Odontophorus strophium)
* Himalayan Quail (Ophrysia superciliosa)
* White-Winged Guan (Penelope albipennis)
* Trinidada Piping-Guan (Pipile pipile)

As my republican uncle says the best way to save a species is to convince people it's good to eat.

OK, I know Americans aren't perfect, but how the heck does the blame for the extinction of the CHINESE white dolphin in their native Yangtze habitat in EASTERN CHINA become our fault?

Wtf? You're changing my statement into a bizarre absolute? Globalization is at least partly responsible for the creation of environmental problems in developing countries, such as China.

No doubt that human kind is responsible for a lot that goes on, but we can't panic every time a species is headed towards extinction. EXTINCTION HAPPENS. Granted that we've been responsible for changes in the environment, but c'mon. If it's not people, then it's the end of an ice age, if it's not the end of an ice age, then it's a Asteroid falling from space. Let's not pretend that Human beings have been the only cause of extinction in the history of the earth.

Anyone who subscribes to evolution (even just on a small scale) has to admit that eventually, new species are going to show up...

That said, I'm not happy to see any species go.

Yes, but how long have Americans been purchasing Chinese goods? Or Mexican goods? Or Japanese goods? And what's the vice versa?

If the count of these things was 400 back in 1980, and we go backwards, we're probably only dealing with a few thousand at the turn of the Century...

Unrrelated: There is a similar species that lives in the amazon.

Son, your statement about globalization is the bizarre absolute. Not mine. You are the one claiming that WalMart is the root of the extinction of the Chinese White Dolphin.

No, I'm pretty sure that he was claiming that commercialism (primarily Western and primarily American) is the driving force behind China's recent industrial development because we've been taking advantage of the fact that they have little or no environmental regulation to drive up manufacturing costs. If the Western demand for cheap labor did not exist, or if we demanded that the people we buy from maintain the same environmental standards that we do at home, the problems in China and other countries around the world would not be so severe. Hence, America (and Europe and all the other developed countries) share some part in the responsibility for the ecological and economic state of China (and India and all the other developing countries).

Thanks. Sherman Homan however chose to see this point of view as an attack on all things American, or Canadian, or Western for that matter - not sure how he managed to make that connection but he did.

The person purchasing the finished product has at least partial responsibility for the environmental consequences of the manufacture. Wal*Mart was used an example to illustrate that point.

True. But the difference now is that they are disappearing at an alarming rate WITH our help. Of course nature will always cope with it, but we might not like how it will do so.

Why didn't I hear the Hollywood stars crying about the Chinese White Dolphin? I guess they failed on that account.

I really liked the week I spent China, but I did notice that they definitely have problems with their wildlife - there are very few animals around, especially in comparison to the size of the country. Of course, I don't see how leftists can blame America for that. Yes, the world economy in globalized and America consumes a lot of Chinese goods, but that's been true for quite some time. What do you leftists want to see, all of those Chinese employed as a result of globalization lose their jobs and starve because China has a poor environmental record?

I heard that it was over the "official" Chinese weight and that they killed it off.

Seriously, have you heard about how the Chinese are killing all dogs deemed too large?

That started about a month ago. People are now trying to hide their dogs from Chinese officials and police.

I agree, but what is the solution? I suppose we could cut off trade with China and try to make consumer good ourselves with better environmental control but then they would probably react by cutting off trade with us. Just a reminder, the shiny new macs many people are using to access these forums with are made in China. Core 2 Duo is out, everyone lets upgrade from the previous model!!

Aside from a few token efforts at environmental regulation, I really don't think consumerism--and hence the decline of the environment--will slow down until natural forces cause it too. When natural forces like crazy weather, nasty diseases and pollution start killing off people in mass quantities that will be nature's way of bringing the human population under control and the environment will bounce back. There's not much technology can do for you if there's no food or clean water. In the meantime, I expect a lot more animals will become extinct sadly.

I just think that we humans have to get our act together and quit being so extravagant in the products we buy and use and also the food we eat. I don't care what country everybody's from, take the quiz on this site, Earth Day Footprint Quiz, and see how many "Earths" there would need to be if everybody lived exactly like you.

And all this sarcasm is really getting old.

Don't bully me, I got an Uzi... HOO-HAH!

Devil's Advocate: Before any "environmentalists" get all uppidy, where the hell was Greenpeace? Or the WWF? They have more than enough money in donations to have actually done something. This wasn't a sudden change, we've known about the imminent danger of the dolphin for years, back when something could've been done about it.

How much you wanna bet Greenpeace will be out protesting globalization, and using the dolphin as a poster boy. Where the hell was Greenpeace for the dolphin?
