What is the furthest you've ever driven?

I once did southern CA to Boston in about 2 weeks. Saw many friends along the way.

detroit to atlanta back to detroit back to atlanta and back to detroit. about 3200 miles when all said and done in about 42 hours.

I've done two 2000+ mile drives. 2600 being the tops for me. I'm a big fan of road trips (think I even did a thread on my previous one so many years ago).

Drove from Mass to Miami flat-out for 24 hours, only stopped for bathroom breaks and food, but we did switch up the driving.

Most I've ever driven at once was 18 hours from Mass to Chicago, all spent in the drivers seat. When I got to my destination I could barely stand upright, and when I closed my eyes all I saw was road. Never again.

Last August, I quit my job and drove from AZ to South Lake Tahoe and San Francisco to see my parents and brother before driving to Fort Lauderdale, FL. Then I drove up to Charleston, SC to see some friends. Then back to AZ and up to Breckenridge, CO. After the ski season ended, I drove back to AZ and back down to Ft. Lauderdale, found a job that doesn't start for a few months, and drove back up to Charleston again to kill some time. My jeep has 165,000 miles on it, it's been on some long road trips.

I'm actually jealous of two of my buddies because they started in Georgia drove up through Canada to Alaska. They then left Alaska back through Canada and continued to drive through Washington Oregon and California. From Cali they went to Vegas, from Vegas they went to Houston Tx and back to GA. All in a brand new 2011 fully loaded F250 turbo diesel. They stopped at a lot of parks and camped but lived the life of luxury in some badass hotels in LA and Vegas.

I love roadtrips... but sadly, I think they are becoming something of the past. I'm not sure how they make any financial sense anymore. Flying is so cheap now, and gas is so expensive. It sucks.

Agreed, we are planning a FL trip next year and it is actually cheaper (and less stressful) to fly. Weird.

Except you forgot one thing for your trip: Mountains, and lots of them. It costs about $180 right now for me to drive from Colorado Springs to Seattle in my Accord which gets about 29 mpg overall on the trip.

Not very far, though a four and a half hour trip from the crystal skyscrapers on Eastern PA to the mud huts of Western PA will probably make time seem like its dragging worse than it is.

Yes, brake using the brakes, but use a lower gear to keep from speeding up while going downhill.

You were told right! Brakes are your friend. But the key is to take it slow in the first place. Downshifting can really tear things up if you don't know what you're doing. Especially in an automatic.

I once went from Hamburg In Germany to Berlin in a Series II SWB.

Also took a Series III LWB all the way across the Pyrenees from the South of France. Fun driving across the mountain passes.

My brother and I flew from Boston to Seattle, rented a Ryder truck, and met a guy from British Columbia at the border. We bought his dragster from him, and proceeded to tow it back to southeastern Massachusetts in 4 days. Got a room for 4 hours one night, that's it aside from bathroom and food breaks. Broke down in Mercer,PA, wheel bearings on trailer we just bought with car failed. Found a junkyard, bought a rear-end out of a heavy-duty van, ripped it out, and spent 1/2 day fabricating the trailer to accept the new rear-end. Left Mercer around 1pm, got back to Mass. around midnight and collapsed for 2 days.

When I was 19 and living in Houston I used to drive back home to Detroit frequently. If I recall correctly it's about 1300 miles. I always did it alone and would only stop for food/bathroom (no sleeping). Used to take me about 24 hours. Looking back it was idiotic to go so long without sleep but I was young and foolish.

P.S. I had the unfortunate experience of getting caught driving across Hicksville, northern USA with only a radio (no tape/CD)… during the OJ Simpson slow chase. The only thing on the radio was country music or else repeated discussions about OJ Simpson's white Bronco.

that is SO german!! I mean taking a WV bus full of food for a long cross continent travel hahaha

I've seen so many of those!

Anyway, the longest I've driven is perhaps.. 400 km. Any further than that and I take a train, or a plane (or a ship if needed) - but not an automobile of any sort (bus is out of the question).

That being said, the longest I've travelled on land-level (no planes involved) is 4000 km crisscrossing the European continent. Strange times.
