Apple's
alleged 12.9-inch "iPad Pro" could ship in early 2015, and with a new A8X processor,
claims Taiwan's
TechNews. The site doesn't have any more details, but based on Apple's past "X" processors, the A8X would probably be a version of the A8 -- used in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus -- with superior graphics processing. Apple introduced the concept with the A5X, which used the extra power to support its first-ever Retina iPad.
TechNews meanwhile repeats its assertion that the second-generation iPad Air will have 2GB of RAM, double the amount in the first-gen tablet, as well as the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. The present iPad's 1GB of RAM is below what most flagship smartphones and tablets use, and can cause problems like Safari regularly refreshing tabs, or iOS killing background processes sooner. Increased RAM leads to higher power consumption though, and Apple has presumably been making a conscious tradeoff. It has never been a factor in causing the product to lag behind competitors, at least thus far.
New iPads should be announced sometime in October, including an updated iPad mini. Some rumors have had the third-generation Mini sticking with 1GB of RAM.
