I have a 12" PowerBook and the white power cable / plug that came with it is on the verge of breaking (where the cord meets the insert). I've looked into buying a new cable from Apple, but the things are unbelievably expensive. Does anyone make a generic cable that'll work?

I use iGo juice. I don't know what the prices are now, but I seem to remember it being $59 when I bought mine. Hope this helps.

If you're talking about the cable which goes from the power socket to the adaptor brick, then any cable with the figure-of-8/two-pronged system will work. These can generally be found on most electronic equipment, I have one from an old hifi.
If you mean the cable from the adaptor to your powerbook is breaking then you'll need a new power adaptor. If your PB is still under warranty this may be covered.

Since you have a 12" PowerBook, you can use the Madsonline adapter here:

They say that they don't recommend using it with the 15" and 17" models though. http://www.madsonline.com/index.html...html~mainFrame
