I just got this from Amazon, what does this mean?

Dear Amazon Customer,

We regret to inform you that your Amazon account could be suspended if you don't resolve your problems.
If your problems could not be resolved your account will be suspended for a period of 3-4 days, after that it will be again operational.
Per the User Agreement, Section 9, we may immediately issue a warning, temporarily suspend, indefinitely suspend or terminate your membership and refuse to provide our services to you if we believe that your actions may cause financial loss or legal liability for you, our users or us.
We may also take these actions if we are unable to verify or authenticate any information you provide to us.
Due to the suspension of this account, please be advised you are prohibited from using Amazon in any way. This includes the registering of a new account.
Please note that this suspension does not relieve you of your agreed- upon obligation to pay any fees you may owe to Amazon.

Regards,Safeharbor Department

OK. I contacted them, they said the email didn't come from them. So I might've been scammed. Is changing my password enough, or do I need to shut down this account?

99% of any email that starts with:

"We regret to inform you that your ______ account could be suspended if you don't resolve your problems."

is spam/scam/etc..

i've seen them for various banks, ebay, and apparently now amazon. just delete it. i hope you didn't click on any links within the email. also, remember to have your mail program NOT display inline images unless you press a button.

Unfortunately, I did click the link, itt just took me to a regular amazon site, or so it looked. I change my email and password on my amazon account, is that enough?

I thought spam too, but the text you provided showed no link so I thought best to call them and find out. However, had you said there was a link (and heaven help you, you clicked on it), I would have just said flat out it was spam.

Never, ever, ever click a link in an e-mail that has to do with money. Always type the URL in your browser by hand.

OK. I learned my lesson. Thanks. Does the reply posted above, mean I'm alright now?

ok, so deleting it was a bad idea if you clicked on a link from it. sorry bout that.

if you got a real response from amazon, then maybe it was legit. but i'm still suspicious.
checking the full headers from an email like that usually helps clear up if it is real or not. and if the links have URLs that are even slightly suspicious, ditch it.

next time, log into the site (amazon, ebay, whatever) using their actual url (just go to the main page) and see if you have a message waiting for you. safer that way.

Change your password and watch your credit cards closely for the next month or so. If your amazon password matched any other passwords you use, change those as well. You'll be alright. Fraud is fraud and even if tricked, you still have protection against it.

If you receive a message ostensibly from a known site asking you to login by clicking a link, assume it is spam. Start checking email headers. And do be aware of the fact that right now Safari is vulnerable to spoofed IDN URLs, so if you get to a site from a link, there is a small possibility that the URL may look valid when it's actually bogus.

Xeo's advice is spot-on, but I'd add one other note: if you're in doubt about an account with a company, then call them on the phone (using a number from their Website or the phone book, not anything from the e-mail or from any links in the e-mail) and ask. That way you can know for sure that you're talking to the actual company.
