How do you pronounce GUI? I've heard it both ways, "gooey" and "G-U-I"

So which is it?

The proper pronunciation would be G-U-I because it is an acronym meaning Graphical User Interface.

But I still think 'gwee' when reading it

You spell it out G-U-I. Gooey is how you pronounce it if your trying to be hip (in a lame/imature way). GUI are the initials for Graphical User Interface. So its "pronounced" G-U-I.

When i hear "Gooey", i assume the person is a compleeeeete idiot. Learn your terms!

Edit: i should read all the posts before i reply... DOH! (Not D-O-H)

I've heard it pronounced as "gooey" by just about everyone of any importance in Silicon Valley, way back since when the Mac was introduced.

GUI is an acronym and should be pronounced as a word.

Not all abbreviations are pronounced as letters...

NASDAQ is pronounced "NAZ-DACK"
FIFA = Fee-fa
(i'm sure I could think of more if I felt like caring about it...)

even though it is an abbreviation, I always think of it as gooey. I don't think something that makes the interface more exciting and beautiful should be so rigid and structured as g-u-i.

There's nothing consistent about how this all works. For example, "GUI" is of course pronounced "gooey", but 'GIF", despite the official explanation, should only be pronounced "gif" with a hard "g" as in "gift" not like the peanut butter which frankly sounds wee-todd-ed.

Apple called it the gooey.

Common sense -- pick the easier one to say.

gee yew eye or gooey?

en aye es cee aye cue or nazdak?

gee eye eff or jiff?

jay pee gee or jaypeg?

other way around

pee en jee or punguh?

et cetera it works either way for different things

I pronounce GUI as "Interface". Almost all interfaces are user based and almost all are graphical; I see no need anymore to call them Graphical User Interfaces. Usually, I'm more descriptive when I'm talking about interfaces that aren't graphical; such as textual and three-dimensional interfaces.

"Gooey", and that's more or less because it IS the easiest way to say it. I would refer to it as just an "interface", except for the fact that I have to occasionally deal with programming interfaces, as well as textual interfaces, so the added degree of detail is necessary.

I don't do any type of interface work and I've repeatedly heard it both ways from people that do...

This ended up being a funny thread though

I say gooey (as most people I know) just because it's clean and easier.

Now, when people see OSX, do you think Oh es ten or Oh eS ex? Do you say it the same way you read it??

I'd just say interface as the "user" part can automatically be inferred.

Wrong. Most interfaces are actually neither graphical or textual. Most interfaces are physical. Buttons, levers, switches, keyboards, remotes etc.

And by the way it's gooey. Look up the differences between abbreviations and acronyms.

Yes it's an acronym, hence: "Acronyms and initialisms are abbreviations formed from the initial letter or letters of words, such as NATO and XHTML, and are pronounced in a way that is distinct from the full pronunciation of what the letters stand for.

Of the two words, acronym is the much more frequently used and known, and many speakers and writers refer to all abbreviations formed from initial letters as acronyms. However, some differentiate between acronyms and initialisms: an acronym is a pronounceable word formed from the initial letter or letters of the constituent words, such as NATO (nay-toe), and an initialism is an abbreviation pronounced as the names of the individual letters, and is formed only from the initial letter of constituent words, such as TLA (tee el ay). This distinction is supported by many dictionary definitions, but not by all."

And:

"A graphical user interface (or GUI, pronounced "gooey") is a method of interacting with a computer through a metaphor of direct manipulation of graphical images and widgets in addition to text."

End of discussion. GUI is an acronym, pronounced gooey and has been since the expression was invented.

Geez. Some people.
