<disclaimer>I didn't post this in Applications b/c I think its an OS issue, not specifically Safari.. but I only notice the issue in Safari (so far).</disclaimer>

At work one of the graphic designers mentioned an issue with fonts in Safari, specifically Wikipedia.

What happens is, instead of being in English, the fonts are (what appear to be) a middle eastern or Indian font. I can't pinpoint which one though. Initially I chalked it up to the international settings in system preferences, but that wasn't it. Then I thought maybe its just a Wikipedia issue (this happens on any Wiki, not just wikipedia), but it also happens on Firefox web browser | Faster, more secure, & customizable.

Below are screenshots showing what is happening and what I have in the International settings of System Preferences. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Any ideas on how to fix this?

The wikipedia article on automobiles renders fine for me. So it must be a problem with the wiki setting you chose. Maybe the site thinks it should render in whatever language that is. Try starting over: delete the wiki cookies, and choose English when you first go to the site.

In Safari, go to:
View > Text Encoding > Default

Otherwise, select UTF-8.

Change the text encoding in Firefox as well.

It is possibly a font conflict, in this case due to Helvetica Fractions - read:

I was about the say the same thing: Helvetica Fractions does bad things to Safari. Some of the Cyrillic fonts can do similar nastiness.
