I tried this client and threw it away after 2 minutes. It works, yes, but is utterly worthless, has almost no functions. It has no benefit over the Web UI or even the realbasic client.

The X11 GUI for MLdonkey is still the best. It's fast and it always works.

Good point.

This client solves the problem people have of just getting the mlnet started. It's a great "donkey for dummies" app. It does, however, need some work.

In other news, I've been able to get d/ls going pretty well. I've had a crashy problem now though. Hrmmm...

Hi all, I'm the developer of mlMac. I'm looking for people who are experiencing crashes with mlMac, so as to correct those bugs. I already have a 0.5 beta which may correct them, so I need testers please.

Thanks.

I can second that. I've found all kinds of stuff. Actually, more than when I configured mlnet myself.

I'll give the 0.5 beta a shot if you want. I sent an email earlier.

Its not difficult at all just follow these steps.
Download Apples x11 beta 3, SDK, gtk1.2.10
Install x11 first then SDK then gtk1.2.10

Apples x11 SDK gtk

Now go to your Applications folder, and X11 should be there.
Double-click. A xterm window will open. Now go in the Applications menu and click customize...
-> Click Add Item : In the first square give the name "Mldonkey" or whatever the name you want to give to the command.
In the second square you will type a command that will open the gui, on the formula :

cd /Applications/MLdonkey/ ; ./mlgui
this command starts the core
cd /Applications/MLdonkey/ ; ./mlnet

( don't forget space between cd and /path )
To have directly the path to your mldonkey folder, what you can do is opening a Terminal ( not X11's ) window then drop your mldonkey folder. Copy the path that appears in it ( something like : /Applications/mldonkey_folder or /volumes/my_second_hd/mldonkey_folder )
Then go back in the X11 application menu, type the command in the second square and paste the copied path instead of
/path_to_mldonkey_folder . Validate.

6. What port(s) of my firewall shall i open to use mldonkey correctly?

Open :
4662 TCP
4666 UDP
And for Overnet the port specified in the web interface preferences ( it is randomly chosen in "overnet_port " ) in UDP and TCP
If you use also other plugins ( see down ), you'll have to open also their ports : Gnutella 6346, BitTorrent 6882, Fasttrack/Kazaa 1214

>>>>To open UDP ports you need Brickhouse for example ( http://brianhill.dyndns.org/BetaStuff/ ) : Jaguar built in firewall panel can't open those<<<<

Well I have to say that I'm surprised that there wasn't a better reception for this app. With all the people wanting simple MLdonkey, and Kazaa for Mac, you think this would be just the thing people would be looking for. Yes it does still need some work, but it's still very much a beta, with better things on the way.

Another little tip (I have cable access so dsl users I wouldn't consider this) I found is that if you set you download bandwidth to 0 instead of the default 50 your downloads scream. I'm still able to browse the web and download files with out problem. In the web interface click on options then clients look for max_hard_download_rate. You can always change it back later.

0 as a bandwidth rate means "no limit" in mldonkey/mlnet. So, no problem for the download rate, but you'll experience problems with such a setting for ul

For the app, quite nice. I've not used it a long time, but it's quite promising

I knew that... I wasn't think of anyone but my self...greedy me but from what I can see they are doing ok. I promise to give them my all my bandwidth next time cause I really want this...uh..this documentary

Looking at the source of a file that I'm downloading 700mb I'm connected to 68 users out of a possible 369. Tally of severs 7219 and I'm connected to 15 and a typical return on a search is 1168 depending on the item you're looking for and I'm doing all this on my little iBook .

/*me happy that Apple released x11

*Please* continue to work on this app. Just for the amount of search results that you get with it makes this the best (errr... well, promising ^_~) P2P app for Mac!

I noticed that too. I get more results than when I setup mldonkey normally. I get tons with mlMac. Maybe I'm just imagining that though.

bollox, you can NEVER be connected to more than 5 eDonkey servers using mlnet..which is useless anyway, 3 is the default for a reason, they are all inter-connected

Say I type in "Bjork" into Acquisition. It doesn't find nearly the amount of songs, videos as mlMac does. I was honestly quite amazed at the results as I was not expecting that kind of a return.

(And I've been having bad luck with getting mlDonkey to work so I'm hoping that there's a stable release of this program soon!)

I have considered trying to setup mldonkey, but since the frequent and recent threads relating to the topic make it seem like it's a pain to set up, I haven't really tried. But now that mlMac is out, is it even worth it to consider using mldonkey? Thanks.

haha yeh at first I was skeptical of why the search window might need a filter. But now I've had searches returning up to a thousand results, and the filter really helps to narrow them down. That's a good thing .

I know that Jul is working on a 0.5 beta, but I'm not sure of the ETA.

I think mlMac is about as easy MLdonkey, or just about any peer-to-peer for that matter, is going to get.

I would probably wait for the 0.5 release though. The current release (0.4) has had some crashing problems, but progress is being made to eliminate those.

The mlMac version 0.5 beta is available now. There's many improvements, including preferences to start BitTorrent, SoulSeek, OpenFT, and OpeNap (in addition to eDonkey and Kazaa of course.) My experience with this version has been virtually crash free. Go get tha goods...

ok, interesting, but, PLEASE limit your max amount of servers to 3 for edonkey servers. More than 3 servers is useless for improving download speeds (they're all connected together), and it is a drawback for the entire donkey network (you just take the place for other clients).

To get even more search results (and more accurate ones, you'll know the number of sources, availability...etc), use www.jigle.com, which asks every servers on the network when you "update" results, Give it a try, you'll be convinced. It's quite busy depending on the hour of the day, but it's a must-have tool.

Finally a program that returns a ton of results and downloads quickly. Could use alot of work on the interface and features, but that's to be expected from a 0.5 program. The first feature i'd like to see would be a rating system to see which user i want to download off. Keep up the goood work abyssoft!

there's a little problem in what you said, since mlmac a gui-frontend for mldonkey...It can't have more features than mldonkey Moreover, mldonkey is developped to be a "good citizen" towards any P2P network it can connect to, so, I don't think you'll be able to manage more precisely sources for the moment (fasttrack support is still beta in mldonkey development)

There is an "availability" column for eDonkey files, although you usually need to rearrange the window to see it (more UI work.)

mlMac has some files in ~/Library/Application Support/mlMac/ .

Also, remember that any mlnet options can still be changed when the core is running by pointing your browser to http://127.0.0.1:4080/ , then -> "options."

frates you prbably already know this but heres a quote from the developer of mldonkey
Just for your information, the development has not ceased. Yesterday, I tried the most recent version, and I was able to download a file from donkey and fasttrack together. There are still many problems to be fixed before a commit to Savannah CVS, in particular the fact that upload is currently disabled in edonkey... but as soon as possible, a new devel release will be made available for beta-testers.

oh, and ps, is it possible to call up the web interface to mlDonkey remotely. ie, can i monitor the downloads on another computer on the lan? I tried entering its local ip (192.168.0.2:4080) in a browser but to no avail.

Thanks in advance.

Via the web interface go options -> ports. At the bottom is a variable "allowed_ips." Add the IP you want to connect from after 127.0.0.1 (local.) You have to hit return and then click save to make it stick. Also make sure port 4080 is open on the machine you are connecting to.

Re: testing, I'd email Jul and see if he needs any more help.

Q: Why did you put so ugly icons ?
A: Because I'm not graphist and I didn't want to lose time on designing icons. If you have better ones, feel free to send me them. Thanks.
I know there is some graphic talent on these forums. Making a nice set of UI icons for mlMac would be a karmaful experience . And they are sure to be seen by many.

I think there is a setting in the preferences for mldonkey's web interface. I'm not at my computer right now so I'm not sure, but look around for the setting like "allow connections from:" with a list of IPs. There should only be one there as the default, 127.0.0.1 if I recall correctly, but you can change that to allow anyone to connect.

No problem.

I'm jealous, my mac currently doesn't have internet access. I don't know if I'll be signing up for DSL, either... At least not until my two other roommates move in. I don't know if I wanna take on the bill strictly by myself, ya know?

I eager to try mlMac, though. Maybe by the time I get internet access it'll be a 1.0 release.
