Hi everybody. I am having major trouble getting my HP 3550 USB printer to work with my Airport Express. I have the Airport Express set up and working with my stereo and my netgear access point no problem. I also can print without any problems with the printer is connected directly to my laptop thru USB.

The real problem im having is with Printer Setup Utility. In the Airport Express directions it tells you to set up your printer using Rendezvous in Printer Setup. When I choose rendezvous my printers name hp deskjet 3500 pops up properly so I know something is working properly. When I chose the printer I a Driver Not Installed msg and I don't have any way to chose my own custom ppd or click ok. I can't do anything except cancel the operation.

So I try to set it up using IP Printing via LDP, IPP, Socket and Rendezvous without avail. I am having no luck with my HP and rendezvous and I was expecting this to be simple. On apples page it pretty much states that printer sharing works with any USB printer I didn't think it had to be a rendezvous networkable printer. Or does it? hmmmmmmm..

I much appreciate any help to solve this problem. I actually went out and bought this printer today just to have a printer to use with my airport express. D'oh!

I am having exactly the same problem with the HP 1300.

I have an Airport Extreme base stations and a HP Laserjet 1300 (listed as compatible with Extreme). When I print via USB it all works fine. When I connect the printer to the base station I have no trouble seeing the printer but it says "driver not installed". I have downloaded the drivers off the HP website and it still doesn't work (despite the fact that via USB it has no trouble locating the driver). Does anyone know what is going on here? Sounds like the same problem.

also...
i thought there was a list of "apple-supported" printers for airport express.
does anyone know where this list could be found?

supported printers

as long as you can print from your OSX, there shouldnt be any problem to print via APX.
if your printer are not in the supported list, dont panic. try out GIMP printer drivers. I get mine work with it.

I suppose you've tried connecting it directly to your Mac(s) and printed a test page then moved it onto your express connection?
this sig intentionally left blank

Yes of course. It prints fine connected to my mac but thru Airport Express It needs to connect thru Rendezvous where in the problem lies. I haven't tried the Gimp Print drivers but I don't think that I should need to. I have perfectly good HP drivers loaded and working.

im not sure why it doesnt work, di you guys try to rset the APX?
the setup should like: "Printer Setup Utility' > 'Add' > 'Rendezvous'
the printer name should appear here.

If it is so important to you did you take the time to read the suported printer list?

I've posted that ealier.
i notice the HP3550 & Epson Stylus Photo 925 are not in the list. Maybe that's the reason?

here's another link to check is the USB printer recognized by APX.

Apple says on there that it was only a partial list. Besides, if the product boxes were all to be believed, most software needs OS 10.2x.

It's not a deal-breaker, but I was hoping that it would work.

I realy want to conect my epson 2200 to the airport expres,

I don't really have a problem with printer sharing. I just have a question about it. And the MacNN Forum Nazi's won't let me start my own thread. Can you use a USB hub and hook up more than one printer to an Airport Extreme or Airport Express's USB printer port?

:-) Thanks

Question: Can I connect a USB hub to AirPort Express so that I can access my printer, scanner, and USB modem at once?
Answer: No. The USB port is only for connecting a single printer. It is not for use with other devices.

This is not a problem with Airport Express, it's just a question...

I just got a new Brother HL-1440, and it's on the list.
Currently I have a G3 iMac and a laptop running windows. The iMac is connected with a cable to a router(with WIFI), and the laptop is connected wireless to the router.
I would like both machines to see and use the printer, and my idea is:
Buy a Airport Express, hook up the printer into the USB-port, connect the express to my existing network and then it would work...

Image of the setup

My question is then; can I use the airport express as a access point and connect it wireless with my router ? Or do I need a cable between the router and the airport express ?

Ok, I've attached my Brother HL1430 laserprinter to my AP Express. I can print from my Windows pc to this printer without any problems. My TiBook (panther) detects the printer also without problems with Rendezvous. However: when I want to print from my TiBook every printjob is stopped. It tries printing and then stalls the job without any errornotification. The printer gets the status 'stopped'.

Airtunes and my wireless network have no problems working though....

My console gives the following output:

Sep 11 14:26:44 localhost crashdump: Unable to determine CPSProcessSerNum pid: 427 name: usb
Sep 11 14:26:44 localhost crashdump: Started writing crash report to: /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/usb.crash.log

OK, I've got a good one. I'm thinking about getting a APX to mainly utilize it as a Wireless Print Server for my old-as-dirt Stylus Color 740. However, I already have a Linksys 4 port G router. Would I be able to have the APX get an IP from the Linksys *via* the wireless network and then share the printer? My router/DSL modem are not anywhere, nor can be anywhere near where the printer is. I purchased a Linksys Wireless G Print Server for USB 2.0, and, well, it doesn't work with my Mac... Oddly enough I can ipp over http print to it from my Winblows box, but can't with the Mac (yes, I did the option-click add, advanced, and ipp over http and used the same URL).

Honestly, any support relating to wireless print sharing would be great right now.

Well, I love having conversations with myself. The good thing is, I found my answer to whether I can attach the APX to a Linksys provided wireless network. Short answer: you can. Long answer: read here. So, I'm going to return the POS Linksys PS and purchase the APX.

Hey Ilja:

My friend has exactly the same problem. We have not been able to figure out what is wrong. Here's what I posted on the Apple Discussion Forums:

Every since I installed an AE to do remote printing, my friend's printing has become completely unreliable. She has a 15-inch PowerBook and OS X 10.3.5/512MB RAM.

1. Wireless printing -- I have had to perform the "Turn off and unplug" AE and HP 1220c trick twice now:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107418

The printer will work for a while and then suddenly hang while showing "Stopped" in Print Center. I updated the HP driver, of course.

2. Direct printing -- What's worse is that the printer no longer works reliably directly. I have had her delete the HP from Print Center and add it back, to no avail.

This is super frustrating. Anyone have a clue to what's going on?

Before this whole AE/10.3.5 episode, everything worked fine. What a fine mess, Apple!

BTW as far as my question goes, it looks like you CAN use a USB hub to hook up more than one printer to an airport express.

I have a laserjet 1300 in my office, with an iBook 1 gig; the small office network (2 dell laptops and the ibook) are networked to our cable modem with a Netgear MR814; I hooked up the laserjet to the airport via usb, and it prints flawlessly out of the iBook.
Damned if I can get any of the windows computers to print though. It's driving me slightly nuts....
Any help would be appreciated.

The new firmware says you CAN share with a hub but only on the PoE models.

I'm not sure if this particular issue got solved or not, but below is the Printer Setup window that works for me. I was fiddling around and found this the only way to get my HP printer to work via Airport Express. I just clicked "Add Printer">chose "IP Printing" and in the next window, I chose the "Rendezvous" in the second window down. My HP PSC 750 wasn't listed in the bottom menu so I chose Designjet 750C (I just chose that one because it had 750 in it and was a letter printer). It works. I don't even have to mess with that stupid HP Director application.

BTW, what happened to the compatible printer list at Apple's site?
