I'd like to get some feedback on success/failure stories for people using OS X built-in RAID.

I've recently salvaged my pair of IBM 60GB's from my PC and wanted to see what the techies thought would be the best way to lay them out for OS X RAID would be without having to spend additional money on more add-in PCI cards, etc. The goal here is data security/redundancy over total performance.

Configuration #1

Primary IDE bus: Boot drive (M) | 60 GB drive #1 (S)
Secondary IDE bus: DVD/CD-R (M) | 60 GB drive #2 (S)

Configuration #2

Primary IDE bus: 60 GB drive #1 (M) | 60 GB drive #2 (S)
Secondary IDE bus: Boot drive (M) | DVD/CD-R (S)

a) Is it better to keep the RAID on a single bus or let it cross between the primary & secondary buses?

b) What would be the impact by having the boot drive on the same bus as the DVD/CD-R?

Cheers.

Wow, I thought more people would have been using RAID...

I'll be giving it a go this weekend; one downside I've read is that it is not possible to partition a RAID in the current version. This is a bit of an inconvenience but I'm hoping that data security will outweigh that issue.

Cheers.

Not an expert in this field, but I will give up my experience.

I have used the RAID configuration with an Adaptec 2940 SCSI card and two WD 40 GB SCSI drives.

It worked really well. I have never done IDE RAID, but here are my thoughts.

I think you would want to keep the drives on the same bus and not split them up. That is just a gut feeling, no technical background to say that is the correct way or not.

In my SCSI experience, they are always on the same bus, so I would assume you would want the same in IDE.

I would think the configuration you would want out be:

Bus 1 - Master HD / DVD
Bus 2 - RAID drives

Hope that helps,
