I just compiled a few of Israel's reasons for their current politics in Lebanon and wondered how they could ever achieve them that way.

- getting their soldiers back
This might have been possible in the first minutes after the kidnapping, but after that? Chances are that they hit the hide-out and blow up their own guys like they did with the UN soldiers.

- securing the border
Probably possible if they re-establish a secure strip on Lebanese territory. But then the attacks will continue on the soldiers securing that new border etc...

- saving the Israeli cities from Katyusha rockets
Probably possible if the re-established security strip on Libanese territory is deep enough. OTOH these launchers are pretty mobile (i.e. brought into the security strip), so I don't know.

- destroying Hezb'Allah
Not possible, even if they occupy the whole country. Examples are the Soviets in Afghanistan or France in Algeria etc...

- establish the Lebanese army against the Hizb'Allah in South Lebanon
Possible, but not when Israel makes no difference between destroying Army equipment/ressources and Hizb'Allah!
