Okay, I've had my PB for a couple days now, and I'm wondering where to find some good desktop images. I've seen a few of the sites mentioned here on the forum, but I'm not finding many with my default resolution (1280x854).

What are my options?

What are you using for your desktop image(s)?

The two sites that I always visit EVERYDAY are the absolute must for any person who likes to spice up their desktops. The first is ResExcellence and they post some of the best images I have ever seen. THey basically put up other people's images, but those people submit them and they are totally awesome! The other site is a really good one for like nature and real life shots. This site has every native apple resolution with almost every desktop picture that they provide. It's called MacDesktops. Hope this helps, these are two sites I visit every morning.

Justin

P.S. ResEX gets new desktop images (6 or so) on Mon, Wed, Fri, and MacDesktops get two new ones everyday.

Is there a way with these apple machines to have moving pictures as your wallpaper?
I would love to have the Matrix deal on my desktop moving and my friend said apples could do that

Daracle:

There's a way to do it, but it's not official (no surprise there). It involves some Terminal commands and having the right screensaver. For example, I know a few people run that one aquarium screensaver in the background.

Just a warning: it's pretty hardware-intensive depending on what's running, so you generally want a fairly new system to keep things running smoothly.

TribeLeader:

I'd also go to pixelgirlpresents in addition to the other recommendations. The desktop images section is more a collection of others' work than her own, but it's all really good material.

Thanks alot for the info.....
Do you know if there is anyone out there that did it already and is available for download?
Maybe even one of those Aqarium ones would be sweet too.....

Daracle:

There are two ways:

1) You can go to the Desktop preference pane and check the box to change the picture every few seconds. It's kind of like a slide show, and you have to supply the picutures.

2) Run your screen saver as your desktop background (this is my favorite and I do run it with a Matrix effect). To do this, fire up a Terminal window and type:

/System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Resources/ScreenSaverEngine.app/Contents/MacOS/ScreenSaverEngine -background

To stop it, type "control-c" in the same Terminal window. This is can be a bit intensive though if your screen saver makes use of your graphics card, especially on a Powerbook. I wouldn't run it all the time that way 'cause the fan will kick in pretty quick. Kind of a novelty thing that you can show off for a few minutes.

Ok so how do you disable this? I'm stuck with it and control-c didn't work.

edit: never mind, i ran top, got the pid and killed it.

I recommend visiting NASA`s picture archive; my desktop shows Neil Armstrong on the Moon. They have everything from Space Shuttle pictures, Hubble images, Spacewalks, ....

As for a moving desktop picture check out Backlight and try it with the screensavers that are built in. Nice effect.

I don't remember where I found it, but it's pretty sweet. It's an x-ray of a powerbook.

I'll look around when I get back from lunch & see if I can find it.

Check out the OS X customization thread for some great desktop wallpaper ideas. Note: this thread is INSANELY LONG (currently at 40-something pages).

Thanks for all of the ideas. Currently, I'm using one of the wallpaper images from Peanuts.com (or Snoopy.com).
