OK, so it doesn't say it's canceled. But it's AutoDesk, and they bought it. They hate Apple as much as Valve. So you can kiss Maya 3D goodbye.

Dude, it's AutoDesk. It's going to be canceled. I'll give it maybe one more rev before they can it and make it Windows only.

surprising news, but i think the thread title just might be a bit of an overreaction.

Just gives Apple the opportunity to "homegrow, er buy the tech" and makes it own Production Quality 3D app to compliment Final Cut, Motion, Shake, ect.

Their FAQ says otherwise, but I believe actions more than PR.

The topic of this post is FUD.

Autodesk has a Mac programming team and has been moving into Mac programming. They already ported their AutoCAD Viewer program.

They have been recently highlighted as one of the first big developers to make the transition to Mac OS X for Intel.

Guess we'll see. I'm convinced they're gonna kill it off.

Aweful title, its not cancelled. If your going to link a news story/press release please have the common decency of not spread FUD.

If they do in fact kill it then you can have your fun and say its cancelled.

Although nothing is definite, this acquisition is most definitely cause for alarm among non-Windows users. Autodesk has a long and ignoble history of killing every non-Windows version of everything it makes, despite large markets existing for these applications. Furthermore, they're known to be so deeply in bed with Microsoft that at times it's hard to know where one begins and the other ends.

Mellinnium is right--while the title may be a little speculative, it is most certainly not far-fetched. I do not like Autodesk, Descreet, etc... never will. I am very saddened to se Alias being bought by the likes of Autodesk.

Maya IS incredible software, and this move definately does not bode well for the other players in the 3D animation arena. I mean, they have 3DS MAX which is big with game developers, and now they'll have Maya, which is big with filmmakers? It is kind of depresssing, imo.

This just makes me THAT much more glad I got the full version of Lightwave instead of the edu version of Maya! I so cannot wait for LW[9]

Maybe they'll buy SoftImage, Renderman, or Lightwave.

Autodesk makes Discreet Combustion which runs on OS X. I'm pretty sure they'll be keeping the OS X stuff. I would not be surprised to see the DirectX API somehow make it's way in to the Maya IDE though since Autodesk is big in to supporting it. What will be gone though is IRIX support which is rather ironic since Autodesk/Discreet is the only player left who actually runs anything on SGI equipment. Who knows... maybe they'll save it.

Hmmmm, who's that Apple guy who works at Pixar (maker of Renderman) again?

Some guy named Steve IIRC.

Renderman is still only that though, a renderer. It would be great to see something like SoftImage XSI or whatever it's called now on OS X.
