Anyone ever seen this before?

My mom opened mail on her laptop (on Mavericks) and this happened. Restart mail and restart computer, no change. Mail was previously working fine with her account set up and full of Mail. And now this.

Corrupted preferences / library, I'd think.

Does she have a backup of the Mail folder in ~/Library/ ?

Everything is time machine backed up. But I'm suspecting that the Crucial SSD is failing AGAIN. I specifically bought crucial thinking that it would be more reliable so I wouldn't have to deal with fixing this computer. And it's been the least reliable brand of SSD I've ever worked with.

My m500 has been fine (knock on wood).

Make sure you update the firmware to the latest version.

Sorry to hear that, l008com. One would think that Crucial SSDs would be good (same with ones from OWC). I'm glad that I went with a Samsung 840 Pro 256 gig SSD for my Mac Mini. I did quite a bit of research on SSDs about 7 months ago, and It had excellent reviews, both from Windows and Mac users. So far, it has been a solid SSD for me.

One thing, though, is that I do not use Apple's Mail application for my EMail. I used Outlook, so not sure how much of a difference that makes.

You stated "AGAIN". That is real disturbing. Hopefully, by taking Spheric Harlot's suggestion, updating the firmware (in case you have not done so already) will help.

Yuk! That's not good.

Wonder if OS 10.9.4 would help? Can you have her try another EMail client, like Thunderbird? It's free, and as far as I know, rather stable.

The problem is not the mail client, the problem is the severely failing drive. Crucial is sending me yet another one.

Good. Hopefully, the other, defective one is under warranty. Also, you said "yet another one". Has this happened before?

Also, when you get the replacement SSD, maybe you should sell it, and buy another more reliable one. If you do that, get a Samsung SSD, and if possible, an 840 Pro like I have. They are reliable, fast, and have excellent reviews. The 840 Pro is still somewhat expensive, but it is fast.

This drive that failed is a warranty replacement for the original Crucial drive that failed. You are on the right track though, i SHOULD sell it and just buy my mom a WD Black HDD. She'll probably never notice the difference, and I'll be able to stop fixing her computer every 9 months or so.

I had a string of failed physical hard drives once. They were all WDs, too. Back then, WD had problems with a particular size of drive. Nobody's perfect. It sounds like Crucial is well aware that some of their SSD are giving people problems.

I can understand issues with mechanical HDs much more than issues with SSDs.

Is this the same machine with the VMware Fusion issue?

Nope totally different. The fusion issue is on my primary desktop, this mail issue is on my mom's macbook pro.
