I’m yet another person with a heat issue regarding my 2 Ghz first generation MBP. Up until this point, the laptop—excuse me—notebook has merely been uncomfortably hot. I dealt with it. Recently, after playing a 3-D game in OSX for a bit I finished, closed the lid, and lifted the computer with both hands to move it back to my desk. Ouch. The tips of all 10 of my fingers were burned from touching it. Not horrible burns mind you, but first degree burns—like a sunburn.
I don’t think it’s acceptable that my laptop should burn me from momentary contact and I want it fixed. My concern is Apple. I know that they like to deny problems like this and when I take my MBP into the Applestore I’m not sure they’re going to take my word for it. Will I be expected to demonstrate the heat issue? What would be the best way to approach this? I would be really angry if I went in, waited for my appt only to be told that temperatures high enough to burn my fingers is “within spec”.

Why not use a program like CoreDuoTemp to check on what the machine's temperature is? Should give you some good hard data, particularly if your fan isn't operating when it should. You can also try resetting the SMC to see if that alleviates the problem.

Well since apple (kb link) advises you not to use the computer on your lap there's not too much you can do. Many people pick up a laptop pad, I've used them myself quite successfully. I suggest you opt for that instead of trying to get something from apple (you'll not be too successful).
good luck

I generally use my sleeve as a pad under my MBP when I put it on my lap. Of course "on the lap" is nowhere near "ergonomic," so I don't do that as often as I might.

Sounds like you should use a quality heatsink laptop pad. FWIW my 17" C2D with 3 GB RAM never gets real hot, even crunching Aperture image batches.

I'm not sure you all read his post. He wasn't complaining that it was hot on his lap... he was saying that it is unreasonable that he can't even touch the computer at all without burning himself. I feel he has a valid claim.

You're correct. I do, in fact, use a cooling pad and I do not use my notebook on my lap--at least while playing games. I got burned when picking up the laptop momentarily to move it. It wasn't frying pan hot, but rather like picking up a hot buffalo wing that was still sizzling. Since my instinct wasn't to drop my computer on the floor, I held onto it and ended up with these minor burns.

Mine has never been hot enough to burn me, and I use it for some pretty intense stuff... are you sure both fans are working? Mine never gets above 60-70°C.

I'm not sure actually since I rarely hear them. I'll have to check it tonight after work with the program mfbernstein suggested. Mine definitely gets hotter than 70°C. Are you on a first generation MBP? It's strange, I really haven't had this problem before and it suddenly started getting hot like this when playing my game, Second LIfe--which I'm addicted to. Maybe my computer is trying to warn me about what a dork I am.
