I have a 2008 mac mini and have recently discovered copying large files to external HDs takes a very long time. Copying a 1.2 gig file takes around 30 minutes.

I did some research and reset the SMC which seemed to fix it for a short time but it's gone back to being slow.

Is there something I'm doing wrong or anything I can try?

Thanks

Most likely you have an old USB 1.1 unit on the same chain as the hard drive. Remove everything except the hard drive, reboot and see if that improves speeds.
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.
