Is there a way i can use my ipod as a backup for the time machine? I turn on the time machine, then i get the "choose backup disk"screen. Just wondering if i could, Beats buying an extra backup drive in my books, by the way yes i know it says i can't use my ipod or idisk as time machine backups. ...

If it says you can't, well, then you can't. You would have to completely format the drive and the iPod could no longer be used as an iPod, if it would work at all. WD passport drives are cheap ($120 to $130 for 320 GB of storage) and will be faster than the iPod drive. Just get a regular external. You'll be much happier.

If you enable disk usage on the iPod and do a little plist hacking, I think you could get Time Machine to backup to an otherwise functional iPod.

Steve is right. You can use the iPod either as a TM backup drive or as an iPod. It's either one or the other. It sounds like you should just get a small external drive and keep the iPod an iPod. It'll be faster that way.
