hi, how can i encrypt an application such that i need to key in password to open the soft ware in Leopard OS ? thanks

Put it inside an encrypted disk image. You can create one with Disk Utility.

If the goal is simply to reserve this app for your private usage, then move it
from /Applications and make a "Applications" folder in your home folder to keep it in.
[may want to check the access on that ~/Applications folder using Get Info or Terminal.]

Of course, much of this (including running an app from a dmg) all depends on
which
program we're talking about... which apparently you have yet to disclose.
