Can someone explain the joke to me? I'm not a web designer so it's going straight over my head.

My guess is this animation is in response to some complaint that their website is not compliant with the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) standards in some way. Hence, all the arguing and the mooning of the W3C "inspector" at the end of the clip.
One should never stop striving for clarity of thought and precision of expression.
I would prefer my humanity sullied with the tarnish of science rather than the gloss of religion.

i can't help but wonder that they should be focusing their time on making icons rather than yap about web standards

every site is different, if they use tables or whatnot, who the f*** cares as long as it works. it's not like their site is complicated or anything.

You know, that's actually a good idea for the vBulletin and phpBB people to handle; when a new topic is about to be posted automatically do a search for some of the things it talks about. Use some bayesian comparison in addition to other techniques.

If a post links to an image or other resource (movie, flash file, etc.) not in a signature that is already the first post of another topic, chances are a thread was already started about it. If a particularly long passage or most of the post is the same or almost the same content as another post, chances are another thread exists talking about it. Pretty much before you post the forums should do a quick search and if the content seems similar to other threads, present the top 5 or so threads that could already be about what you are discussing. That way you could either go to those threads or make your own.

Searching before posting might also be done more often manually if you could search more than once every 60 seconds or whatever the limit is here. Often I just do a quick check for a couple of words or something, then realize there is something else I could be searching for in the meantime. I go to try that but cannot due to the timeout so I'm like "fcuk it, I'm posting".

Hey, that's another good idea; uncensor the forums. As long as censored words aren't used excessively they add character and intensity to a post.
Genius. You know who.

It looks like it's supposed to be the first in a series. Given that, my guess is that this is the start of some kind of announcement that they're redoing the site in a more accessible, W3C-compliant way. It also sounds as though they're ditching .asp, though there's no way to tell what they means they're going to. Maybe they're switching to an OSX-based server (which would require dumping .asp, since .asp locks you into Windows)?

I'm not sure I quite understand all of the icons, though. There's a square-looking thing that looks like it might be some kind of package format, but I'm not sure what they're trying to get at there.

'Tis a .sitx package. Someone might have whined at them for using it instead of .zip (Windows users usually get stumped when you send them a .sitx).

And stuffit expander is not included by default anymore with mac os x (good thing, btw). So .sit and .sitx files are also confusing to mac newbies.

Microsoft offers some neat integration features with ASP, but you can tell a website is a .asp before it even loads... because, well, they're slow as shite. All of them.

Outside of ActiveX, I just wanna slap someone using .asp. Unfortunately, Washington Mutual switched from Solaris to Windows Server. I'm pretty scared about doing online banking now after both Bank of America and Germany's largest bank were hacked (both running Windows.)
