Usually we see people posting like crazy on a new release. I'm surprised none has stareted a thread on the new Opera 6 final r. Then again, I've tried it myself, and I'm not so surprised: it sucks. The interface is OK but the speed is like IE 1.0!

Why ask a question if you already know the answer to your question?
"It sucks"
"The interface is OK"
"speed is like IE 1.0"

I tried it and the speed is very good. It lies a little behind Chimera, not not by alot. It has really great features and it looks good. Very cool Aqua interface and search input window in the main toolbar where you can search google or whatever you like directly. I was very impressed. It looks like a fast OmniWeb.
I give it 8/10

You must have accidently gotten your hands on the build with the debug code removed.

I really wanted to like Opera. I even ponied up the money to encourage them to continue to develop for the Mac... but... I'm sorry to say... the program sucks! It's slower than Chimera, but OK, no Mac browser is faster than Chimera. It's interface is also really slow. Is it just me or is scrolling really slow? Trying to scroll the MacNN forums was like watching paint dry. In fact, scrolling is significantly slower than the previous betas.
One other gripe about OS X browsers in general: why is the back function so slow on all browsers except OmniWeb? In OmniWeb and web browsers for MS Windows going back is instant, but there is a slight lag in Chimera and a huge lag in Opera (for complex pages)?
Maybe I just have a slow computer though (Pismo 400 MHz G3)

OmniWeb will cache up to three pages so back function is instantaneously.

It' 9 o'clock on a Saturday, regular crowd shuffels in, theirs an old man sitting next to me making love to his tonic and gin.
Well that had nothing to do with this but I think it sums up Opera... bah!

Well, I tried it. Painful experience.
It's slow. Way slower than Chimera, significantly slower than Mozilla or IE. Renders a lot of things poorly. Scrolling is worse than jerky, it's downright spastic.
And the d@mn thing literally tosses its cookies. I had to re-login every time a new page at this forum got loaded!
Definitely not a contender...

All I can say is... what happened?!!
The Opera 5 pre-releases were insanely fast. That was the best thing about the browser.
This thing is so incredibly slow that it's completely unusable! Takes forever just to load MacNN's front page, keeps SCOD'ing for about 10 seconds at a time...
How on earth did they bloat it up this bad?!

I think its a very good browser, if only it were a little faster with rendering and scrolling.
The Opera 7 beta 1 for windows is excellent - I hope the mac version is as good as it is someday...

The Opera 6 final is fast enough. Strangely it slows down a lot when browsing MacNN forums. I don't know why, but here it takes forever to load pages and scroll. Then I got apple.com and everything is fast again. It is really good, but it doesn't seem to like these forums. Odd.
Other than that, I have had no problems with it. Don't forget that this is a carbon app that works both in os 8/9 and X.
All in all, pretty good. 8/10 as I said before. (but naturally I have the version that has the debug code removed )

Yeah ... and it's really too bad, because their Win browser is (or at least was) the best on that platform. Back when I still had a Wintel box, I used OperaWin exclusively -- it was fast and efficient, and first showed me how amazingly cool tabbed browsing can be.

I think Opera has practically admitted that they rushed out Opera 6 mostly so they can start fully focusing on Opera 7 for Mac. Hopefully that's true. Opera 7 on Window kicks ass, even though it's still beta.

Sadly, that was the same line they fed us on Opera 5... that they were focusing on 6.
My hat is off to them for the effort, but with the likes of Nav and OW the bar has been raised. Back when IE was the standard, Opera was appealing.
But X has brought new blood... and Opera must adjust

The GUI is OK, I like the fact that you can magnify webpages and that you can instantly search Google. The speed is really bad and the fonts look terrible. Scrolling speed is absolutely horrible in full screen mode. Full screen browsing is a cool idea and I hope we will see it in chimera or omniweb 5, it could be useful on the 800*600 screen of my iBook...

Speed aside:
Pros: Zooming is cool.
Cons: can't change font size. Ad window at top hogs realestate. Price. Bookmarks window gets in the way.
I keep it around for testing, but that's all. I used it semi-regularly in OS 9, but has fallen behind in X.

Seems to me it's looking for some kermit.macnn.com address a lot of the time. Other pages seem to be reasonably fast.

www.apple.com loads approximately as fast in Opera 6 as it does in Chimera 0.6
The forums are dog slow in Opera 6.
