Talk about strange. This apparently might have something to do with the forum search indexes, so we did some maintenance on those tonight. (It was just as well, since we wanted to try out a different MySQL search feature that's much faster and reduces load on the database.) I'd be very curious to know if you notice any changes with thread creation (both with and without Weyland's tip -- especially without).

(Also, the Search Results page display bug should be fixed now.)

How do you mean? It's always been an 'NN issue -- we run our own vB server, it's not an outsourced system like some sites use. Something in the interaction between our vB server and our database server isn't quite right, and that's what gorgonzola's been hunting down.

If we can go a few days without any problems, then I'd call it officially fixed. All signs point to yes, though. I've also turned AJAX back on, so people can and should test everything now.

Now, what is this problem with posting links with text? Are you talking about something like this?

Correct, the "Insert Link" button when creating a message should prompt you to enter the URL (which it does), but also any text you want associated with that link (which is the part that is not working).

Make sense?

You know, how about putting the forum software and the database ON THE SAME SERVER?? It might solve some of the timeouts?

Even though that might not be related to the problem of the vB upgrade.

Nope, that'd be a terrible idea. The timeouts were not network-related in any way. The fact that only SOME functions were affected and not others clearly shows that it was not a communications error.

Besides, it is GOOD practice to separate functions to distribute the load. vB is CPU intensive, and it puts a high load on the database. It makes more sense to keep them separate.

Not only is it a terrible idea, it's a standard technique for large-scale sites to separate services onto several different servers to reduce load. Almost no large site runs their servers in the way you're suggesting. Also, not only is the current problem unrelated to the database being on a separate server, no problem we have *ever* experienced has been in any way caused by this distribution of resources.

Try highlighting the text you want to link and then clicking that button.

tooki, you do realize that feature has worked within Safari up until the vB 3.5.0 upgrade, correct?

Yeah, that's sort of weird.

Is it a "feature" of AJAX ?

AJAX probably has mucked with it indeed, who knows.

Actually, it didn't work with Safari until a very recent version, and I think it was a prerelease version.

Huh? I've used this feature as far as back as 10.3.0 using that version of Safari, if not longer...what are you referring to exactly?

Maybe we are referring to two different things, but let be more clear by using pictures...

1.) Hit the "Insert Hyperlink" button when composing a message and this is the 1st box that should show up...insert text:

2.) This is the 2nd box that should show up...insert URL:

3.) Final product:

That was done using Safari from v10.3.0 on a forum running vB 2.3.5. Everything works fine.

Is this what you are talking about tooki?

If I quit and relaunch Safari, the "new posts in this thread" indicator for threads that I've posted in always tells me there have been new posts since my last visit, even if there have not. I don't know if this is related to the upgrade or not, but I just noticed it recently.

Yup.

I don't remember it ever not working that way, until the recent upgrade.

The way the linking feature is implemented was changed in 3.5.0. It has nothing to do with AJAX in particular, but it's not going to give you an explicit prompt for the text anymore; you'll have to select it or type out the vB code manually. This apparently brings the feature's behavior in line with the other editor buttons.

An explanation:

1) [This is the way it has always been done with the WYSIWYG editor, and now works the same way for the "normal" editor.] Highlight the text you would like to make a link, click the insert link button, type/paste a URL, the text you highlighted will be made into the link.

2) [This is for the non-WYSIWYG editor only.] Click the insert link button, type/paste a URL, the word "TEXT" for the link will automatically be highlighted, so you can just start typing to overwrite it with the text you want.
In any case, it sounds like you'll just have to write out the vB code or use some Safari nightly.
