Some people have been complaining that the fonts in the forum are too small. We've been playing with a few other options (which is why the font has changed recently), but I want a lot more opinions before we make any final decision. So please cast a vote from the following 3 options.

Because of the text rendering engine that Safari uses, it will not "fake" bold and italic text. Since there is no Lucida Grande Italic or Bold, any italic/bold text in the forums will be rendered with the next specified font (Verdana). This is just to explain what Option 2 means for people who don't know.

Also, BTW, the text for the post body is in Lucida 11 right now. Fonts elsewhere in the forums are still at Verdana, but all this will be cleaned up once a final decision is made.

Thanks.

I noticed that the font got a bit bigger this week, and I like it the way it is now, so 11 point whatever will do for me.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

No, it didn't. Or maybe it did, but only for you.

Different people have different needs. Some people have better eyesight than others, some people have larger screens, some have smaller ones, some people like running high resolutions, some lower resolutions etc.

That is why browsers allow the user to set their preferred font size. A web site is then displayed at that preferred font size (or relative size to that).

This forum however specifies fixed pixels as the font size and the administrators refused to change this to a font size relative to the user setting specified in the browser preferences. But they are considering to increase font size by 1 pixel as a compromise.

Yes, it did.

I made a small mockup using the Lucida Grande and Veranda fonts (choice #2) in TextEdit. Personally, I think this looks best.
I voted for #2.

Well, add me to the pro-change side. That damn non-antialiased Geneva font on the front page was UGLY.
My vote: Either Lucida or Verdana, or anything else as long as it's not Geneva 10.

Veranda for me

But why can't it just be CSS and have a size box and javascript switcher with a cookie for people to click to make it bigger? A lot of sites have those.

Verdana, definately.

Whenever I get to the post-box page now I cringe at the font in there, as it's just so nasty compared to Verdana.

Who cares if it's a MS font? It's a damn good one.

Try and find a machine that doesn't have Verdana, also... won't be easy.

Verdana 11, definitely. I like it. Geneva 10 used to be nice but these days something different is needed.

This seams a good option? A few CSS files with diferent sized Text/Fonts Let people select which ever they prefer, and save it in the login cookie.

I voted for, Lucida Grande 11, where italic and bold text will show up in Verdana in Safari. Didn't want to vote for just Verdana, since it is listed as a Microsoft font. We need to have an Apple font on a Mac site.

I say just use Verdana throughout. Even though it was designed to be read on badly aliased Windows displays, and you have to install stuff you don't want in order to have it, Verdana, especially 11px Verdana, is probably the best screen font there is (cross-platform speaking).

Though I wish Apple would do something as it's seems absolutely ridiculous to keep dragging around a dead piece of software(Internet Explorer) just for some fonts.

Can't we just go CSS instead of endless font and table-tags? It would do an endless amount of good for the server too...

They would have to change an endless amount of vBulletin templates. vBulletin 3 makes much better use of CSS, but vB3 Gold isn't out yet.

I voted for Verdana. It is probably the best and only good thing Microsoft has ever been behind. I use it browser-wide in Safari as well as Camino. I only wish OS X would allow for the changing of the default system font to it.

Yeah, we will eventually move to vB 3, but it's not out yet, and we generally wait for at least a few bugfix releases before attempting an upgrade. Hopefully the HTML generated will be much improved.

Incidentally, we'll make a decision about this at some point, but since Lucida and Verdana are basically equal, we'll have to figure out something. Also, we're busy dealing with a few other issues, and this takes a lower priority, unfortunately.

I like the font now. If someone is using a high-res setting, they should use the size limiter that is built into Web browsers.

Mac BBS... should use a "Mac" font. Lucida Grande!

I'm really not a fan of Veranda. xlr8yourmac's forums uses it, and just something about it bugs me.

guys who base their vote solely and simply on that fact that its a mac site and needs a mac font are missing the point totally. even if the board does use Lucida Grande throughout, Veranda is still going to be used as the bold and italic font 'cause Lucida Grande doesn't have a bold or italic variation.

Lucida Grande does have bold. But it doesn't have italic or bold-italic. Therefore it would be better to choose Verdana right away.

I think the forums were just fine and I don't know what all the fuss is about. I think Lucida Grande is a good choice if we must change the font.

I think we're going to stick with Lucida for now. As irrational as it may be to insist on a Mac font, if that's what people want, I don't see much reason to fight it. Clearly, the vote was very close between Verdana and Lucida, so we just had to make a decision.

This isn't set in stone, of course, but we're going to try it out for now. Thanks for participating in the poll.

First, read Designing With Web Standards by Jeffrey Zeldman.

Then read Eric Meyer on CSS: Mastering the Language of Web Design by Eric Meyer.

Then read Building Accessible Websites by Joe Clark.

Then read Foundation Mac OS X Web Development by Phil Sherry.

Then we won't have to have polls like this again.
