I've just upgraded the forums to vBulletin 3.5.0. Some notable changes include the following:

Completely rewritten message editor with ability to instantly switch between standard and WYSIWYG modes
Thread title editing on forumdisplay via AJAX
Thread opening and closing on forumdisplay via AJAX
Super-Quick Reply on showthread via AJAX
Inline post edit on showthread via AJAX
Username suggestion for PM recipients and search by user via AJAX

...and so on. There are many dozens more changes, but I don't think I can link to them directly.

As usual, there's some goofiness after an upgrade. I'll be restoring the icons, but please post in this thread if you see something messed up. Also, let me know whether any of the new features are interesting or useful.

Thanks!

Sorry, I should clarify something here. There are some pretty neat new AJAX-related features in vB 3.5, but they won't actually show up in the forums until we transition our old templates to use those features. Unfortunately, the new features seem to have required massive changes to the stock vB templates, so it'll require a little work before we can really see all the new toys in action.

As a teaser, here's a video with a demo: http://files.vbulletin.com/3.5/ajax.html

Could we do a recount of posts?

I've had many, many posts not register to my post count because of DB errors while posting. And I know I'm not alone.

The upgrade to v3.5.0 didn't kill off of the Google ads...can the update be re-applied?

You just click somewhere (not sure where) and start typing without having to reload the entire page. We'll need to modify the templates to take advantage of this, which isn't a trivial task due to the number of customizations we've made.

I ran a post recount, but it doesn't seem to have made much of a difference...

Right now, I'm still trying to figure out why I have ten stars. *scratches head*

I like the stars but it's shame they don't tie in with tooki's mushrooms.

And on a side note: Remember to fix all those buttons that come up when you do an advanced post. None of them work.

Would it not be a good idea to upgrade the server to at least a 486DX2 before all the spiffy add-ons make the whole thing unusable?

That would depend on how big the wheels are and how big the cage was.

This has to be the first time I'm posting a reply in this thread without knowing whether it'll show up. 90+ per cent of the times I've tried to perform normal posting actions since the upgrade, either the address couldn't be resolved, or the quite valid threads are read as "invalid." Just viz my double no-content thread in the Mac OS forum. It did have content, just didn't show up. Can't reply to it, either, even though I should be able to.

Every time I reply to a post, I get a page failed to load message, yet if I wait long enough, the reply seems to show up. There are many people inadvertently posting four, five, or six of the same message because of this.

Edit; this is the error message I just got on this post;

Safari can’t open the page “http://forums.macnn.com/newreply.php”. The error was: “lost network connection” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1005) Please choose Report Bug to Apple from the Safari menu, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message.

I have a question about the database problems for the mods:

Just out of curiosity, what is the problem exactly? Is it simply the servers being overwhelmed? If so, how much of a tax does the MTA used by the forum software to send out reply notifications add?

3.5 seems to be eating replies to this thread in the iPod forum. It says (at the moment) that I made the last post, but it doesn't show up in the thread. On a presumably related note, it won't jump to the bottom of the thread when I click on my name.

Separate from this, I didn't see anyone mention that inserting a link no longer asks for the text you want to have displayed.

still working on all the problems that this upgrade brought with it.

the server issues are a little harder to handle. i turned off a lot of the more server intensive services (related threads, for example), but that can only do so much. the machine this forum is on also houses a number of other popular domains. and it gets hammered something fierce quite often. it looks like the forums will be getting its own dedicated box in the very near future though. until then i'll just try to work on getting all these ajax features working for you crazies.

the quick reply box won't work until i enable all of the ajax features (as ajax has taken over responsibility for the quick reply). it's not as easy as flipping the switch, sorry. i'm about 90% done now. all these variables and templates are giving me a headache.

Also, some of these bugs are probably related to these outdated themes as well (some of the theme upgrades are mandatory in order to ensure correct operation). Hopefully, once we finish updating everything, we'll be rid of a good number of the bugs. In particular, the "could not load this website" thing will go away.

As for questions about the servers ... the server running the PHP code is different from the server running the database. The web server (a quad Xeon 2.8 GHz with 4 GB RAM) is handling well and disabling stuff like email notifications would pointless, since the issue is with the database. The database server is not slow, but the forums generate very heavy load on the MySQL server itself, and much than any of the other sites using it. For this reason, the forums database is going to be put on a dedicated server soon and then MySQL will hopefully cope with the load better. (This is at least one of the main issues we've been dealing with.)

I haven't been the one handling the servers for well over a year now, so I don't know what the timeline on this is.
