There's got to be more than a handful of us using Twitter, especially with the v2.x of the iPhone/Touch OS out there now.

I think it would be neat to see what occupies the other 5% of your online life outside of the forums! Post your usernames so others can follow if desired...

A more comfortable solution would be to create a macnn dummy account which gets followed by every interested forum member.
People then can check the followers of that macnn account and follow it’s followers. (?!?! never mind me. I’m not very eloquent today. (or ever?))

It'd be an interesting concept to run a twitter for my NN account, but I imagine the twitters would be rather sparse, and made up mostly of random remarks and revelations.

That's because no one cares if you use Twitter, except, PERHAPS, your family and close friends. Even then, I doubt most of them give a crap.

You're assuming that there is a "right" way to use Twitter.

Here is how Twitter defines itself:

Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?
Personally, I don't care what my friends, family, and co-workers are doing at any given moment. If I'm interested, I'll call them and ask them.

I don't see the need to go to their Twitter page and read that they bought some grapes today that taste really good or that they are currently installing more RAM in their computer.

EDIT: To each his/her own though...

Quite true.

Twitter can be a great tool to keep in touch with people that you would otherwise never hear of, “famous” people of the web industry for example.

Twitter is more of a fun distraction for me than it is a valuable tool. Facebook is my most useful social networking tool, especially the group feature. Twitter is more of a way to casually keep in touch with friends who live far enough away that I never know what's going on with their lives. This way, we don't have to call or text...we just tweet.

I use it very infrequently. Maybe 2-5 messages a week and only because one person insists on messaging me instead of calling or emailing. If more of my friends and family used it (text messaging) I might use it more. But alas, they don't and therefore I don't.

Listen, like I said, to each his/her own. I just never got into the whole blog/Twitter/text messaging thing. Simply not my thing that's all. I also never kept a diary or journal.

When you find the Paul Graham of Twitter, give me call. Yeah, I dismissed blogs and I was wrong, but that was because I didn't really make a fair comparison of blogs to how people already communicated. What's the cognate of Twitter? That annoying friend who calls you every time his girlfriend looks at him mean?

I'll confess I'm on Twitter. A lot of bloggers I like also happen to be on Twitter, so there's interesting stuff to read; certainly more than tweets like, "hey, I just washed my hair!" Don't think I'll be handing out my twitter account here though.

So your contributions to the forums are exciting, interesting, and a must-read?

http://forums.macnn.com/search.php?searchid=1958717

That dilutes it too much. What you want to do is fart in a plastic baggie expelled of excess ambient air (Zip-Lock type). If you're lucky, it will condense to form a fart concentrate you could use as cologne.
I'm off today. No plans other than playing some COD4 on PS3 and maybe watching a movie or two.
MacBook Air is the stupidest name Apple has ever come up with.
No offense taken, but Twitter is targeted at a completely different crowd than your typical forum user; I'm not asking you to use it; rather, I'm looking for people who ARE using it to reach out.

In fact, at the rate you post, you'd probably have a pretty good following on Twitter

Facebook is "when you go look at it." Twitter seems to be more real-time—though I don't have any real experience with it. I'm on Facebook so I can keep up with my classmates who are now scattered hither and yon in their internships all over the country. I have no need to know what they're thinking about having for lunch, and frankly, none of us has the time for that sort of thing anyway. So I may "see the point" of Twitter, but I don't see a use for it in my life. 'Course, I send maybe 3 text messages a month on my phone, so maybe it's a whole paradigm that I don't get.

I send very few text messages but I use Twitter all the time. Text messages are 1:1, Twitter, is 1:many. The analogy fails.

Well, I have this theory that people who don't care for/understand text messaging never like Twitter. This isn't to say most of your points aren't completely valid -- it's just the level of disdain for twitter usually marks that text messaging in general isn't your kinda thing.

Originally Posted by starman View Post

In what way? The two share a very similar style (delivery, message length), and I think that's part of Twitter's short-coming. For many Twitter is, essentially, a mass subscription based SMS system. I'd argue Twitter has more in common with SMS than Blogs. Twitter's similarity to blogs is that you're about equally as likely to find a Twitter worth following.

Anyway, to somewhat address gh's post, I think Twitter has two sets of groups that it appeals to. On the more personal level, it's an ideal way to mini-blog/keep track of friends in real-time and en masse. This appeals to a generation of people used to having too much information and being "connected". The second set is uses Twitter a little more judiciously as an informational tool (and perhaps more like email).

I'm no Twitter expert, so before starman jumps all over me for points he doesn't agree with, we'll postface this entry by noting it's merely the opinion I've formulated after a year of knowing about/using/ignoring/returning to using Twitter.

Huh? What do my forum posts have to do with Twitter? Further, I post here VERY little compared to most people. Less than one post per day.

Don't be offended. You're the one who started this thread inviting people to check out your Twitter page. It's not my fault it's boring and uninteresting.

BTW, those posts of mine that you quoted are in response to topics posted by others, not topics I started.

I'm new at this online social networking stuff, so have absolutely no clue what this Twitter jobbie is all about. From the info on this page, I have deduced that Twitter is basically: "Please, somebody, stalk me. Anybody. Please. I'm nobody without a stalker."
Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.
