I was just wonder if the new iBooks have fixed tha CD burning speed issue that some old iBook owners were having problems with. I'm thinking about getting the 12.1" combo and I just wanted to know if I can actually burn at the rated speed of 24x. Thanks.

i would also like to know if i'm going to have to sign crazy 4x petitions? i mean it could be worse, (unwanted optimism: 2x petitions, 0x petitions)?
i'm guessing since there hasn't been large amounts of bitch-ery all over these forums that they are safe.
thanks ya

No problems so far. My 800 died after Apple released the 900, and they replaced it with the 900 as none of the 800s "were in stock."

Anyway, the 900 is burning at 16x consistently. Now, if only I could deal with the cheap finish, etc.

That's great that it's burning at "16X consistently." How about 24X which the drive is supposed to be capable of?

OK, 16x . . . 24x.

I thought 16x was the max, based on the specs that an Apple tech "iBook Specialist" gave me when they arranged the swap of my dead 800 mhz for the 900 mhz. I was informed that the CPU, HD, and the case were the only differences so I always assumed that the 16x burns in Toast and from the finder were the norm.

So, I just loaded a CD and it would only burn at 16x. Now, I've subsequently read that this should burn at 24x, and it doesn't look as if that this iBook burns at that speed. Maybe the problem lingers (although 16x is beter than 4x).

Anyone else?

i was looking through the apple forum support pages,
and i guess it does burn at 24x
heres the link

http://discussions.info.apple.com/[email protected]/3

i hope that works,
if it doesn't just look up 24x on the forum search

"3 minute burn times" is what a 900 12' combo ibook user was saying

hope this helps alittle
stace;)

oops i just wanted to add there is a good bit about color comparisons too,

Ok, I tried another CD and it burned at 24x. It's a different brand (Verbatim) while the last few I burned were all no-name CompUSA, free with rebate, CDs.

Maybe were back to that "it burns at the max on quality CD-Rs" debate of the 800s.

Or maybe the crap CDs you have aren't rated for 24x burning...

Well maybe the media is just too cheap, the computer doesn't recognize that it can burn more than 16x.

If it works fine with Verbatim, it probably is due to the discs and not with the machine...

When it comes to CD-R's, don't skimp.

Verbatim or Mitsubishi.
