Hey all. I want to get a B&W G3. I surf the web, listen to MP3's and burn CD's. I guess thats basic these days. LOL!
Would a B&W with enough RAM running Panther be ok for this?
I want a 400-500mhz G4 but they are a couple of hundred more than the G3 on ebay. Will a G4 matter for what Im going to do?
Thanks for the help.

The G3 will be fine for that. Invest in at least 512MB of RAM for OS X on a G3. My B&W ran noticeably faster each time up to the 1GB max...less noticeable from 768 to 1GB but it still helped.

For what you are wanting to do the B&W would be just fine. Later down the road you can invest a little in a processor upgrade. PowerLogix has a 900MHz G3 for $249 or a 1GHz G3 for $349. Keep that B&W going for a couple more years.

I agree with Chinasaur about the RAM. If you don't have at least 512MB you will be waiting alot.

You can get a G4/500 from OWC for $150.
1GB of RAM is $184 at the moment.
And add SATA to your rig for $64!

Steer clear of the revision 1 motherboard if possible.

No upgrade to an old computer is an investment, it's an expenditure. I tend to think that, given the high cost of many processor upgrades, it's often smarter to spend the money towards a newer machine.

Very true. Also, recognize that with the G3 you are buying a computer for what you are doing today, and not for what you could be doing tomorrow. In other words, you're not giving yourself very much room to grow.
Peace. Love. MacOSX.
