Senior was an interesting person. An auteur in some ways, an eccentric in others.
Apparently, he and RDJ used to “bond” by sharing drugs. Definitely eccentric in that.
His film, Putney Swope, was a lampoon on advertising, race, and business, all wrapped up in what appears to have been a very watchable (for 1969, anyway) flick.
He also directed Mad Magazine’s Up the Academy, another opportunity to lambaste the establishment and established social structures, this time with the help of “the usual gang of idiots” at Mad. This one I have seen, and it was a fun romp. On a second viewing, a lot of stuff came through that I’d missed while paying attention to the silly and very funny plot. Just like Mad’s publications, the deeper layers took some time to sink in.
