I upgraded both mine and and my wife's iPhone 5s' to 8.1, and things seemed to be fine until we seemed to have problems with iMessages I'd send to her. In messing with things, I have rebooted my phone (and hers) more than once. Her phone always boots with the new, black on white boot screen, but mine boots with the older, black on white screen, even though both show that they are running the same build of iOS 8.1.

What gives? Is my phone "confused?" Is this a problem? We seem to have fixed the iMessage issue (both re-logged into iCloud and that looks like it worked), but not having this new boot screen puzzles and concerns me.

Mine is Space Gray, hers is gold; both had the black on white screen during the upgrade. Is the screen supposed to be related to the phone's color?

Wait, isn't the pre iOS 8 boot screen white on black? Is that what you meant to say? Yours is the older white on black?

Hmmm.... just tested mine out. I'm certain when I upgraded my black iPhone 5 to iOS 8 the boot screen switched to black on white. Now with 8.1, it's booting with white on black.

Maybe phones with a black face have white on black and those with a white face are black on white?

Yep. AFAIK, that is the case.

White-face devices boot with a white screen, and black on black.

Too bad they didn't do something to differentiate the boot screens. I am certain that the first reboot after (during) updating had a black apple on white, on my phone as well as my wife's. Unless that in itself was a goof, that's what has me wondering.

I think that was *during* the upgrade, before the new OS was on there.

That makes sense. Since getting the iMessage issue addressed, I haven't had any other issues, and it seems like everything's goining along fine.

New Macs also have a different boot screen than older Macs!
My new Mac mini boots white on black with Yosemite - the older Macs I have boot black on white!
