OK, this is already historical. Connecticut police backed down within a day because of the publicity. But you'll be reassured to know the plans were shelved for now, not dropped.
Officers in East Rock (CT) are starting a pilot program.

“Cars will be checked for visible valuables,” said New Haven City Spokesperson Laurence Grotheer.

If they see a valuable Grotheer says they’ll take it if your car doors are unlocked. They’ll leave a note and you can pick it up at the police station property room.
What a generous public service. You land in police records for not committing a crime. And if you don't show up they keep the valuables. Likely if you're a traveler passing through, and can't wait around until Monday morning.

The news site wants to know if police will rifle through unlocked cars, making sure they miss no valuables. Also, since they're emulating thieves, the car itself is valuable. Should a spare key be in the car, might the car fit in the property room too? Oh, and why not use the new service on houses. If valuables are visible through the windows and a door or window is unlocked.

The police might be needing a much larger property room. To help citizens of course.

How come our police keep acting more like the thieves they're supposed to oppose, and less like responsible citizens?

I mean, could the police try any harder to be dispised by the public ?

Aren't all the unnecessary shotings and violence enough ?

It's absolutely crazy what kind of police state the USSA is becoming.

How is this any different from stealing? The police do not have license to break the law.

This is breaking and entering, and grand larceny. I can't imagine this would pass any judicial challenge (unless the judicial is in on it).

Outrageous.

I imagine the backlash to this type of subjugation wouldn't be of the peaceful sort. If the police started wholesale B&E peoples cars to steal shit, they might not like the response they get from the armed populace.

Hey, subjugating your populace isn't cheap! They need the latest and greatest military equipment which ain't cheap.

How come our police keep acting more like the thieves they're supposed to oppose, and less like responsible citizens?
Because they think we're not paying attention, and in a disarmament state like Connecticut just what are people gonna do about it? Defend themselves and their livelihoods? Ha!
