I wasn't sure what to expect when I went to see Cars. Turns out I actually kinda liked it!
Worth seeing, IMO.
And Ratatouille looks pretty good, too.

Computer Graphics are yawn, a dime a dozen. I am waiting for another hand-drawn classic like Mulan.

P.S. No cartoon has been hand-drawn for years and years. Even the ones that look hand-drawn rely heavily on computers.

Indeed. Take a look at the upcoming Rapunzel Unbraided. It's going to be CG animation but done up to look like a painting in motion.

Ditto. Looks like a lot of fun. I don't know what they were thinking with Cars (although I haven't seen Cars so I don't really know... but the trailers sure didn't make me want to see it).

In the end, it's a kids movie.

Sounds like a very exciting project. Hopefully, it will become a classic worth getting a Bluray player for.

If you haven't seen it then why say "I don't know what they were thinking."
By the way, I saw it last night. It was good.

They say "Paris, France" because there's also a "Paris, Texas"

I didn't look forward to Cars, since I'm not that into cars. I'm a bit blinded to the various models' respective virtues by way of being a cycle commuter who mostly tends to think of cars as big metal monsters that almost kill me. Not that I begrudge anyone's automotive enthusiasm, I just can't really identify.
I also realize that Cars probably isn't really about cars as much as it uses non-human characters for novelty and visual/verbal puns. But bugs and monsters and toys and fish all appeal to me more as sources of cuteness than do cars.
Good food and furry animals, though, I'm all about, so I'm looking forward to this 'un.
Interestingly, Dreamworks has a movie about the adventures of some British rats coming out soonish. I won't just shrug it off as Dreamworks dreck, because a) I haven't actually seen any of their previous features (though I trust the conventional wisdom that they don't rise to Pixar's level) and b) they're collaborating with Aardman, the people behind Wallace & Gromit and Rex the Runt (and admittedly, the less-than-stellar Chicken Run).

I thought the opening shot with the Paris skyline was stunning. It's nice to see that CG can create a warm atmosphere like the old animated films did.

The thing is, saying "Paris France" like that does seem very in character for Patton Oswalt (pretty sure that's who it is), the voice actor for the main rat. One thing that Pixar does well is streamlining the scripts to the voice actors, or at least giving them a lot of liberty to transfer themselves through their characters.

The HD 1080p trailer is stunning. (It's 9.6 Mbps H.264.)
However, I can't make my MacBook play it full screen with Quicktime on the external 1360x768 HD LCD screen over DVI. Is this a QT issue or a MacBook issue?

Probably the most popular "Paris" in the US is of the Hilton variety, unfortunately.

I'm pretty sure it's the most shallow and vapid variety of Paris.
And no, she's not gorgeous.

Epic bump.
Anyone else see this tonight? I thought it was pretty good. Seemed a bit short, but overall, not a bad flick.

I don't waste my money in "not bad" flicks, especially because I don't have kiddies begging me to bring them see the movie.

Another software developed for this movie was Faux Plane which was used to add depth to flat two-dimensional painting. This has probably been seen before, but I think the problem with Cars is that a car (unlike ants, toys, monsters, etc.) is just too un-anthropomorphic to animate. It's hard to get people to fall in love with a talking irregular polyhedron.

My wife and I went to see it last night and we both really enjoyed it. She said it is probably her favorite Pixar movie so far. It's not my favorite, but it was really good.
The short film, Lifted, before it is also great. Really funny. It's not on iTunes yet. I guess they'll put it up when Ratatouille comes out later this month.
Side story. After we watched the movie we decided to go buy tickets for Fantastic Four and watch that. We walked up to the front desk to ask the person who was working there if we could buy tickets and she said we didn't have to, and that we could just go watch the movie.
Not going to say no to that.

So June 29 is a big day for Steve Jobs!
I take that day off for the movie and check out the iPhone.

I saw the preview a couple of days ago, and yes it's very good. The animation was gorgeous and there were a lot of genuinely funny moments. I don't really know what it is, but Pixar just has something that the other studios don't.
