So, as most of you probably know, the latest PowerBook update brought back hibernation (where the contents of RAM are saved to disk, in case the RAM should lose power during sleep), under the name Safe Sleep. (It was last present in Mac OS 9.0-9.0.3.)
Well, it turns out there's no new hardware involved in doing this, so someone figured out how to make it work on any Mac.
Safe Sleep Your Mac
I haven't tried it yet, but early reports are encouraging.

Ya I remember the first iBooks had it. Then they pulled it because it was causing problems. Can't believe it took this long to sort out.

Yeah, my Pismo had that function for about 2 months before updates nixed it. It never caused me problems, but I never saw it work right, either!
Let's hope it's done right this time around!

No, of course not. It's a software feature that was introduced in 10.4.3. It's not even in earlier versions of Tiger.

That if your battery runs out while the machine is asleep, the contents of RAM won't be lost. This is also of particular use to owners of 12" PowerBooks and all iBooks, which have no backup battery to allow batteries to be swapped while asleep.

It's nice to see that Apple is making progress in reimplementing this feature. Hopefully, at some point not too far from now, we'll be able to invoke hibernation from the GUI rather than having it only as a fail-safe.

on new HD powerbooks, safe sleep is off by default, i.e., if you choose sleep, it will... sleep.
if you want to safe sleep directly, just enter in the Terminal
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 1

Has anyone been able to get this to work on titanium models?
I desperately need this function as my 1ghz Ti will only sleep for a few hours before it shuts off and I lose what I was working on...
