i don't know if it's been mentioned but i can confirm that the dvi to video [s-video] converter for the imac and g5 [product number M9267G/A] is compatable with the macbook; i just called apple to find out if they had a s-video converter for the new 'book and thats what they set me up with. so i would assume the other dvi to 'whatever' converters will also be compatable. hope this helps someone.

The iMac has a mini-DVI out, which is NOT the same connector as the full-size DVI on the MacBook and the G5.

I think he might've meant Mini. I think it works for the Mini too, but I haven't researched it.

yes i meant mini, sorry for that slip. here is the link to what the man on the phone ordered for me. he also said other aftermarket adapters should work but may not be capable of displaying full resolution; but that may just be apple spiel.

Full resolution huh. What does that mean? S-Video is probaby not nearly as high resolution as the MacBook / Powerbook display, no? Or is the primary limitation in the device you connect it to? It seems like I read that some DVI connectors have pinouts for an analogue signal too, so I'd think the adapter would work based on the correct DVI port.

Good to hear that Apple confirmed that $19 adapter should work with the MacBook.

S-Video gives a standard definition NTSC signal, which is basically just 640x480, so that's no issue there. If you're curious: S-Video is just the same thing as composite video as far as resolution is concerned. It's different in that luminance and chrominance are provided from the source and do not require a combination and separation. As such, a comb filter isn't needed at the display device...but I'm rambling.

You can add FW 800 with the ExpressCard slot if you really want.

Anyone seen any ExpressCards available yet? I've seen a handful announced, but nothing for sale... esp. in the variety that will fit in the macbook.

Newegg has SATA, FW400, and FW800 ExpressCards, but they're all /54 instead of /34... I think using the /34 slot was a mistake on Apple's part.

Why is /34 a mistake? Just because there aren't cards at at this very moment?

Mistake implies they had a choice. Are you sure they had one? I'm sure the MBP looks pretty cramped inside. And I'm sure 9 out of 10 Mac users prefer being thin and slim than having a 54 vs. 34 slot. There will certainly be many 34 cards in the near future.

Ahh, yeah, well, I'd be SHOCKED if FW800 isn't coming.

A variety of /54 cards are available today, while there are few, if any, /34 cards. Looking forward I'd expect to see /54 cards with more ports, such as SATA and FW, while /34 cards are too small. Also, /34 is too small to fit an adapter for CompactFlash cards (the de facto standard for pro digital cameras) inside the slot.
Using the universal slot allows the end user to use either type of card, while the /34 slot limits them to only /34 cards.
